    “Assessing Decision Making Capacity”

    Assessing decision making capacity in vulnerable adults (e.g., individuals with dementia) is a complex assessment that should be done in a compassionate and systematic manner. This presentation will describe the signs and symptoms that should trigger assessment of decision- making capacity in vulnerable adults, describe the process of assessing decision making capacity that a physician undertakes, discuss barriers to accurate assessment and steps to overcome the barriers including steps that adult protection services professionals can take to communicate their concerns to the person and their families.

    “When Guardianship is Needed and Defining POA and Care Management” 

    There are many options that families and professionals working with clients have when it comes to the need for someone to help with decision making.  Participants will learn to identify when it is not possible for someone to complete POA paperwork and what happens when no one has been chosen. They will also learn to identify when and what type of situations Guardianship is needed and the guardian’s role. They will also review the benefits of working with a professional Care Manager and the role they can play in navigating the ever-changing health care field.

    Vulnerable adults are often the targets of foreign scam artists and predators who know they are likely to have savings and other assets to steal, but what about people close to them that abuse their position of influence or authority? When should family members and other concerned people step in and what can be done if they suspect financial exploitation is occurring? This session will explore common red flags that indicate action may be needed and discuss practical options to help protect vulnerable persons and their resources.
