Two faculty complete the Ten for Teaching Certificate

Dr. Julie Mercado from the College of Business and Dr. Nirmala Kandadai from the College of Engineering recently completed the CTL Ten for Teaching Certificate! Both are assistant professors who are deeply committed to teaching and student success.

Julie Mercado
Julie Mercado, Ph.D., CPA. Assistant Professor in the Department of Accountancy

Dr. Julie Mercado joined Boise State in Fall 2020 and does research in the nonprofit arena, focusing on governance, management, and donor decision making. She teaches Cost Accounting and Accounting Information Systems and likes to incorporate Team-Based Learning (TBL) strategies into her in-person courses. Students especially appreciate her course communication style, where she sends weekly emails that provide a quick overview of the week’s content, highlight upcoming events/projects, and remind students about homework due. In order to personally connect with her students, Julie sends out a “Fried Friday” video each Friday, where she spends 10-15 minutes talking to students about something unrelated to course content (e.g., current events, mental health, grief, gratitude, personal growth).

She works on multiple outreach efforts for girl scouts and elementary education and was recently awarded “Accomplished under 40” for her work!
