Students regularly use Canvas gradebooks to gauge their standing in a course. Save yourself some time in keeping your gradebook up to date by updating the settings in your Canvas course to automatically apply a grade of zero for missing submissions. This setting will prevent you from having to enter in zeros manually for missing assignments and it will be clear to students that they have a missing assignment. To turn on this Canvas function:
- Open your gradebook in Canvas
- Click the gear icon in the upper right corner
- Check the box to “Automatically apply grade for missing submissions” and enter the grade you want automatically applied
- Click “Apply Settings”
Whether you use this fix or enter zeros by hand, it is important to make sure that zeros are entered for missed assignments in a timely manner so Canvas is up to date.
