Call for Applications: Writing in STEM Faculty Learning Community

The Department of Writing Studies, in collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning, invites applications for the Writing in STEM Faculty Learning Community (FLC). This semester-long community offers STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) faculty a space to reflect on and strengthen the role of writing in their teaching. Designed especially for instructors who may not see themselves as “writing teachers,” this community will explore how writing helps students learn disciplinary content, develop communication skills, and express their understanding in authentic ways.

Participants will discuss practical strategies for designing writing assignments, providing feedback, and making disciplinary writing expectations more explicit. Along the way, they will consider how writing reflects and reinforces the values of their fields.

Program Goals

Participants will:

  • Reflect on disciplinary identities and writing practices
  • Develop approaches for scaffolding writing instruction
  • Explore practical approaches to providing feedback on student writing
  • Strengthen student writing-to-learn opportunities
  • Articulate concepts of writing and learning that shape disciplinary communication
  • Create an actionable teaching intervention, assignment, or resource to support writing

Commitment

The FLC will meet in person every other Monday from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm a total of 7 times throughout Spring 2026 (January 26 through April 20, 2026). Participants are expected to attend all meetings.

Compensation

Participants who attend each session and develop an actionable intervention will receive a stipend of $500 for their participation.
