Course Experience Mid-Semester Assessment Process

The Course Experience Mid-semester Assessment Process is designed to better understand students’ experiences within the classroom environment. This map focuses on key areas such as classroom community, sense of belonging, and growth mindset, as influenced by their interactions with their peers and the instructor.

After conducting a Course Experience MAP in their class, faculty will be able to:

  • Reflect on student feedback about the classroom environment, including the class community, their sense of belonging, and growth mindset
  • Outline intentional changes to their teaching and course design on the basis of the feedback and consultation process
What does a Course Experience look like?

Midway through the semester, a CTL consultant will conduct an anonymous student feedback survey and a guided discussion in your class. An asynchronous option is also available. Following the MAP survey, the consultant will meet with the instructor privately to review the results and together identify areas for improvement.

During the MAP survey, students are asked to rate the following statements on a scale from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree:

    • The instructor encourages me to share my ideas and experiences during class discussions and activities. (Class Environment)

    • I believe I can succeed in this course if I put in the effort. (Student Growth Mindset)
    • The instructor communicates the belief that with hard work, all students can succeed in the course. (Student Growth Mindset)

Students are also asked to respond to the following open-ended questions:

  • What is my instructor doing to help me feel connected and to create a positive classroom environment?
  • What could my instructor improve on to help me feel connected and to create a positive classroom environment?
