The Center for Teaching and Learning sponsors workshops and other events to provide Boise State instructors with opportunities to reinforce best-practices in teaching, learn from colleagues, and reflect upon the choices we make as teachers. Online workshops allow the Center for Teaching and Learning to meet the diverse needs of faculty, including distance faculty and adjunct faculty.

Implementing Universal Design for Learning in Blackboard

This workshop provides a conceptual and theoretical framework and robust concrete, practical strategies to guide faculty in building course materials on Blackboard according to the best practices of Universal Design for Learning, thereby improving the accessibility and quality of the learning experience for all students. Participants will enrich their understanding of accessibility and universal design while strengthening their skills in course design. In addition, participants will take steps toward mastering many features of Blackboard. After completing the modules in this course, participants will be able to design engaging, effective, and accessible courses in Blackboard.

Supporting Students by Creating Transparent Assignments

The Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) project has produced extensive research showing that the use of transparent assignments (defined as assignments with a clear purpose, tasks and criteria) greatly improves student performance and retention. This workshop will introduce the basic framework of transparent assignments, share some of the research on their efficacy, and give participants a chance to apply the TILT approach to assignments from their courses.

WEBINAR: Analytics for Student Success: Promise and Perils for the Inclusive Online Classroom

The ability for qualitative and quantitative analytics to enrich our understanding of online learning and reveal hidden patterns and trends in the learning environment is ripe with potential. As instructors and administrators consider the ways in which analytics can enhance student success and retention, it is imperative to approach data analytics with a lens of equity and inclusion.

This online webinar will include an introduction to student analytics, a critical exploration of ethical principles surrounding their use, and applications of ethical analytics to improve the student experience. Participants will come away with tips and tools for how to evaluate and employ data for student success, with an understanding of central issues of consent, surveillance, erasure, power, and rhetorical sensitivity.

WEBINAR: Tips for Teaching High Enrollment Online Courses

This online webinar will bring together faculty who teach high enrollment online courses to share their tips and tricks, including how to connect with students, manage the workload and efficiently grade student work. Participants will be encouraged to share their challenges and solutions to common issues in online teaching.

WEBINAR: Online Teaching Triage

This synchronous webinar is designed as a “check-in” session to see how your online teaching is going this semester. Come to share ideas, tips, tricks, and discuss problems. This webinar will be held on 2/26/20 from noon to 1.

WEBINAR: Strategies for Successfully Integrating Service-Learning into Online Courses

This webinar will help faculty think about how they might integrate service-learning projects into their online courses. Facilitators will provide a general introduction to service-learning principles and a framework for considering how the practice can be integrated into courses. Participants will also hear from faculty who currently use service-learning in their online courses, and learn about their decision points and experiences.

The Universally-Designed Rubric: Grading Student Work Submitted in Multiple Formats

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for the design of materials and instructional methods that are usable by a wide range of students. UDL recognizes that learners differ in the ways in which they navigate a learning environment and express what they know, and that learning systems should accommodate variability among learners from the outset. From these premises is drawn a central principle of UDL: provide students with multiple means of action and expression. One way to do so is to allow students to submit an assignment in one of several media.

This facilitated, asynchronous online workshop uses a major research assignment in History 100: Themes in World History as a case study to explore the ideas around this aspect of UDL. This is an assignment that asks students to document their research in either a 4- to 5-page paper, a food blog, or an 8-minute video. The workshop also explores the logistics of assessing a single assignment submitted in multiple media, with particular attention paid to the use of assessment rubrics.

Managing Teamwork in Online Courses

Research shows that students benefit from interacting with each other in online courses, but creating effective group projects can be challenging. This workshop is designed to introduce and model ways to create and manage productive group assignments in online courses, including platforms, model activities, assessment options. We will also discuss ways to avoid common pitfalls in online group assignments.

This asynchronous online workshop is designed to help online instructors utilize group work in online courses – including platforms, model activities, assessment options and pitfalls.

Universal Design and the Syllabus Rubric

In this facilitated online workshops, faculty will use a rubric and other materials to explore ways to incorporate principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into a syllabus–a bedrock document of any course, one reflecting both the content and activities of the course but also its underlying design.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework based on developing tools, teaching materials, and teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning differences and challenges that a diverse student population presents. Typically, after principles of UDL are incorporated into a course, the changes benefit all students, not just students with specific needs and challenges.

A syllabus is a great starting point for incorporating principles of UDL into course design, teaching materials, and teaching methods. By taking a few simple steps you can create a syllabus that will serve as a tool that helps prepare all students for success.

Teaching First Generation College Students: Strategies for Supporting their Success

This workshop will offer a greater sense of understanding of first generation college students’ experiences, needs and challenges. Strategies for better supporting first generation college students (FGS) will be provided.

Incorporating Active Learning Strategies into the Online Classroom

Interest in incorporating active learning strategies into online courses has increased over the past few years. This online workshop will focus on strategies for creating engaging online activities, and model ways to get students to interact with content and each other online.
