Jaime Hansen (an adjunct faculty member in the School of Public Service) used Service-Learning in her PUBADM 514 Introduction to Nonprofit Management and Collaboration course to give students the opportunity to apply course concepts about the strategic planning process and to gain practice as consultants with a real community organization.<\/p>\n

Jaime did something very unique: she took two students, Annie Ponce and Savannah Slater, to Pocatello to conduct a Strategic Planning Day with the board and staff at HealthWest<\/a>. During this session, the team conducted a set of activities based on the content learned in class, such as the NOISE Analysis and a Theory of Change application.<\/p>\n

The remaining students in class (Lauren Krigbaum, Katie McInally, Anna Naylor, Aspen Phillips, Carly Snider and Will Spoja) used the data that Annie and Savannah gathered to develop a strategic plan and recommendations. This report will be delivered to the Director of Health West, as well as presented to the organization’s staff and board.<\/p>\n

The experience was an impactful one for Annie. “The highlight was the experience of going to Pocatello, actually being there, engaging with the clients, and seeing their passion for helping people who are generally underserved in the community. Additionally, being able to support them in their strategic planning process allowed me to feel like I was part of the project not only as a student, but as a professional.\u201d<\/p>\n
