This is the call to action made by our recent guest speaker Peter Felten, Assistant Provost <\/span>for Teaching and Learning at Elon University and author of numerous books on undergraduate education including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.jhu.edu\/books\/title\/12146\/relationship-rich-education\">Relationship-Rich Education: How Human Connections Drive Success in College<\/a>. In a recent follow up to Felten\u2019s faculty workshop, Boise State faculty shared what they do to support student connections in the classroom, including the following strategies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-students-names\">Use students names<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learning a lot of names in a short period of time can be difficult. Try to link interesting facts about your students with their names.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Print out all the photo-ID images and make flashcards of them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use name tents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Survey students to ask how they would like to be addressed in the classroom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-provide-opportunities-for-students-to-connect-with-you\">Provide opportunities for students to connect with you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Send a video introduction\/welcome email at\u00a0 the beginning of the semester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take students to your office! It can lessen the &#8220;stress&#8221; on going to an unknown place. Don&#8217;t have time? Make a video on how to get there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Albertson\u2019s Library offers drop-in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/library\/using-the-library\/spaces\/\">room reservations<\/a> for office hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Validate students\u2019 perspective by participating actively in discussion groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold weekly in person\/remote \u201cStudy in 30\u201d or \u201cStudy in 60\u201d sessions so that students may drop in and ask questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check-in and check-out with students to ask how they are and how the course is going for them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show up early to class and offer time for questions and more casual conversation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send emails to students in recognition of their contributions, noticing their growth, or when they\u2019ve been absent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share about yourself and your journey in college.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-interactive-teaching\">Interactive Teaching<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create opportunities for active discussions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include opportunities to reflect on and to bring academic interests into the classroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use icebreakers regularly throughout the semester.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer personalized and regular feedback.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk to students about how they have grown during the semester so they know you see them as an evolving person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Circulate and interact with students as they are working in class, and ask interactive questions about that work &#8211; or their lives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include peer-review activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would you like to share other strategies you use for building a relationship-rich classroom?
