The elements of teaching, learning, and student engagement are woven throughout the offerings of Academic Impressions. For example, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academicimpressions.com\/courses\/0922-engage-genz-free-sfwd\/\">Rethinking Our Engagement with Gen Z Students<\/a>\u201d webinar, featuring Vicki Cook, Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment and Online Professional and Engaged Learning at the University of Illinois Springfield, asks viewers to reflect on their engagement with Gen Z students.\u00a0<br><br>As Cook notes, this is a different group of students, and their cares and concerns differ from those of previous generations. These students care about \u201cmaking their college experiences practical and purposeful\u201d; they want to be able to \u201cutilize materials around them to build their own learning.\u201d Here are some of Cook\u2019s observations about how educators can effectively engage Gen Z students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We may hold misconceptions about current students. Not <em>all <\/em>students want everything online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Active learning is effective for and valued by students.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embracing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uis.edu\/colrs\/teaching-resources\/foundations-good-teaching\/pedagogy-andragogy-heutagogy\"><strong>heutagogy<\/strong><\/a> (a learner-centered approach to education that emphasizes self-directed learning) empowers students to learn how to learn, fostering lifelong adaptability and critical thinking.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating more seamless learning environments means learning with and from students. Current students are \u201c<strong>Figital<\/strong>\u201d (one foot in the physical world and one foot in the digital world), and they have much to teach us about what it means to bounce between the physical and digital realms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help educators reflect on how they can better engage Gen Z students, Cook offers three guiding reflective questions:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do the wants and needs of current students differ from those of previous generations?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do these students want from their college experience?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can those working in higher education create valuable experiences that foster a sense of connection between students and their institution?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflection and reflective teaching practices are two strategies the CTL encourages faculty to use in many of our programs.
