The Food-Energy-Water Nexus as a Context for Developing Systems Thinkers in the Geosciences
The importance of an earth systems approach to education has been well documented for K-12 science education, geoscience literacy, and geoscience workforce expertise. Inherent in this approach is the idea of learners’ systems thinking abilities, including student conceptualization of the Earth as a system and the role of humans in Earth system processes. The Food-Energy-Water-Nexus (FEW-Nexus) framework was developed as a way to understand the interplay between natural systems and their human dimensions in the space where these three resources, each vital to human society, intersect. In this seminar, I will discuss my work and current efforts of the National Collaborative for Research on Food, Energy, and Water Education within the context of opportunities for utilizing the FEW-Nexus framework within geoscience education to support systems thinking and geoscience learning.
