Captions and Transcripts

What is the difference?

Transcription is the process in which speech or audio is converted into a written text document, whereas captioning divides transcript text into time-coded chunks, which can then be synced with the audio and displayed. Using captions along with providing transcripts allows people to access videos by alternate formats making the content of your video more accessible to all.

How can I add captions and transcripts to videos?

Using the Panopto platform, captions can now be automatically generated for all videos created. This is a great first step to making videos more accessible. To be compliant with Boise State Policy on Accessibility it is important to take the next step and correct grammatical and spelling errors in the caption file of your video. To learn how to do this yourself, see the LTS knowledge base article Creating Closed Captions for more details.
