About the Program

Andrus Center for Public Policy

Sponsored internships with federal, state, nonprofit, or other mission-centered business enterprises that provide undergraduate Boise State environmentally focused students with meaningful work experience that will enhance learning and skill development, assist in post-graduation job placement, and ultimately support the development of the environmental and public lands stewards of tomorrow.

A 10-week summer internship will encompass pertinent job experience and a variety of skill development opportunities such as fieldwork, job shadowing, industry networking, conference attendance, mentoring, and career counseling.

Students will complete their programs by making presentations of their internship experience and learning to a panel including but not limited to the Andrus Center Board of Governors, School of Public Service Dean, Environmental Studies Program Director, NSF Idaho EPSCoR Program, and other affiliated colleagues.

Andrus Scholars Program Includes:

  • 10-week, 30-40/hr a week, 6-Credit hours Summer Internship
  • $7,000 stipend to help pay for internship credit hours, provide the equivalent to a living wage for hours worked, and any internship-related travel and expenses

Upon successful program completion, Andrus Scholars:

  • May receive letters of professional recommendation from their internship agency supervisors upon request
  • May request letters of professional recommendation from the Andrus Center or Environmental Studies representatives
  • Will receive free attendance to select Andrus Center conferences for the remainder of their Boise State program studies. This includes our annual Environmental Conference, Women and Leadership conference, and any Education focused events and Andrus Lectures.

Advocates for the West

Advocates for the West seeks a highly qualified and motivated summer intern to work closely with our communications, engagement, and development (fundraising) staff, our attorneys, and our summer law clerks on our busy legal advocacy portfolio.

As free lawyers for the environment, Advocates for the West protects and defends the West’s public lands, water, fish, wildlife, and communities. We empower conservation organizations, Native American Tribes, and environmental advocates through top-notch, strategic legal services. With our headquarters in Boise, ID and staff in Oregon, Montana, Colorado, and Washington, Advocates for the West is a proven winner in the court of law, enforcing bedrock environmental statutes and the conservation values you treasure. Opportunities:

  • Public Outreach: Work with our communications team to develop messaging, conduct media outreach, and develop content for our website, newsletters, and other materials; create narratives that highlight the values of our work in tandem with our development team; help organize and participate in outreach events.
  • Learn & Network: Meet with our clients and partners, conduct field visits, and attend court proceedings; participate in weekly staff meetings; attend weekly summer clerk and intern seminars to learn more about environmental law.
  • Legal Support: Conduct some legal and factual research under the supervision of one or more of our attorneys.

Qualifications:

Applicants with strong writing and communications skills, an interest in law or policy, and a passion for the environment are preferred. We value diversity and encourage students from underrepresented communities to apply.

Location:

This internship will consist of in-person work at our Boise, ID headquarters and regular, virtual meetings with staff located throughout the West. There is potential for some remote work. We strive to be flexible to accommodate the intern’s personal needs and preferences while providing enough structure and support to foster a successful learning experience.

Duration, Hours & Schedule:

10 weeks. Flexible start and end dates. 30 hours per week. Typical and preferred work hours are on weekdays and (roughly) within the 8am-5pm range; however, we are willing to consider alternative schedules to suit the intern’s needs.
