Artificial Intelligence at Boise State

Artificial intelligence work at Boise State spans teaching and learning, research, student success, infrastructure, policy, and operations. The AI Initiative at Boise State provides a coordinated institutional structure for connecting this work across the university.

Brian Bolt serves as Executive Sponsor of the AI Initiative, providing executive-level coordination and institutional leadership for AI-related work across Boise State University.

The Artificial Intelligence Coordinating Committee (AICC), co-chaired by Daniel Sanford, Kelly Arispe, and Leif Nelson, serves as the university’s central coordinating body for AI-related work.

AI Governance and Coordination

Boise State’s AI work is coordinated through a shared governance structure while also extending across many units, programs, grants, and partnerships. The AI Initiative and AICC provide coordination, guidance, and visibility; they do not replace the work already happening across campus. The sections below distinguish between formal governance structures, AICC committees and working groups, and broader AI-related activity across the university.

Artificial Intelligence Coordinating Committee

The Artificial Intelligence Coordinating Committee (AICC) is responsible for guiding strategic decision making and implementing action plans that support Boise State’s campuswide AI initiative. The committee coordinates AI-related work across the university and maintains alignment across teaching, research, student success, infrastructure, policy, and operations.

Core functions:

• Develop recommendations related to AI strategy, investments, and policy
• Oversee guidance and communication related to AI use
• Support training and professional development efforts
• Coordinate AI-related work across units and initiatives
• Maintain visibility into broader AI activity across campus

Professional Staff AI Development

Chair: Katie Thomas

Professional staff learning and development related to AI use in administrative, operational, and service-oriented work.

Key initiatives:

• Foundational AI learning resources and introductory training for professional staff
• Coordination with divisions, departments, and staff organizations to identify AI learning needs
• Documentation and sharing of effective AI-enabled workflows and use cases

Student AI Literacy

Student AI literacy and student-facing guidance.

AI Guidance for Researchers Committee

Responsible and effective use of AI in research.

Tools and Features Subcommittee

Evaluation, coordination, and guidance related to AI tools, features, licensing, and platform integration.

• Facilitation of software review and evaluation processes for emerging AI tools and features
• Coordination of communication and guidance related to AI tools, caveats, and institutional use
• Coordination with eCampus, Learning Technology Solutions, OIT, and academic departments on educational AI tools
