Section I. Student Organization Recognition

E. Governing Documents

All student organizations recognized by the university are required to have some form of governing document: a constitution, a statement of purpose, or other descriptive documents.

Organizations wanting to revise their constitutions or other governing documents must submit them for review and approval to the Student Involvement and Leadership Center.

Constitutions

Constitutions for student organizations must include:

  • The full name of the organization.
  • The stated purpose and/or mission of the organization.
  • A nondiscrimination clause consistent with the university’s and prohibiting discrimination on the basis of age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, disability, veteran status, political affiliation, genetic information, and sexual orientation.
  • A definition of the organization’s membership that is consistent with the Student Involvement and Leadership Center’s policies for recognized student organizations.
  • An outline of all officer positions and their responsibilities.
  • A provision for the election and removal of officers.
  • A provision for the selection and removal of the advisor(s).
  • A provision for decision-making/voting processes.
  • A provision for amending the constitution that is inclusive of the membership.

Governing Documents

Governing documents, such as by-laws or codes, for student agencies must include the following:

  • The full name of the organization.
