Eligibility and Enrollment Requirements

Graduate Assistantships (GAs) at Boise State are available to admitted graduate students who meet specific enrollment and employment criteria. The information below outlines what you’ll need to know to start – and stay – eligible for your assistantship.

Quick Facts

  • You must be admitted to a graduate program before your GA begins.
  • You must remain enrolled and in good academic standing throughout your appointment.
  • Minimum enrollment: 5 credits for GA policy requirements (some programs require 9).
  • International students must enroll full-time (at least 9 credits).
  • GAs cannot hold another paid university position without prior approval from the Graduate College.

Enrollment Requirements

Graduate Assistants must show steady progress toward their degree by enrolling in at least 5 credits per semester (see Policy 7170, Section 4.4.7).

  • Some departments require 9 credits each semester.
  • International students must maintain full-time enrollment (9 or more credits) to comply with visa requirements.

If you will complete your degree by the end of a semester, you may enroll only in the credits required to graduate (no fewer than one credit). However, you must:

During summer or intersessions, GAs must meet the university’s intent to enroll criteria – typically meaning you are registered for the minimum credits required for the next academic term.

Educational and Professional Development

Graduate Assistantships are designed to support both your degree progress and professional growth. You may be expected to participate in non-compensated educational or training activities, such as workshops, teaching development, or research seminars. These experiences complement your formal coursework and assistantship duties.

Key Policies

  • All GAs must follow Graduate Assistantship Policy 7170.
  • You must maintain the minimum enrollment requirement to stay eligible for GA tuition and insurance benefits.
  • If you resign or are terminated early, your tuition waiver and insurance coverage will be adjusted to reflect the shortened appointment.
  • International students must comply with all visa and work authorization regulations.

GAs may not hold other paid university employment during their appointment without prior written approval. To request an exception, submit the Request for Approval of Secondary Position to a Graduate Assistantship to the Graduate College.
