Senior Associate Dean, College of Health Sciences

Joelle D. Powers is the Senior Associate Dean of the College of Health Sciences and a Professor at Boise State University. The first step towards a career in social work was a trip to Africa during her undergraduate education. Witnessing poverty to such an extreme was the catalyst to pursue a career that focused on issues of social justice.

The experience led Powers to pursue a Master’s of Social Work from San Diego State University and her Ph.D. from the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Powers conducts research on school-based mental health, evidence-based interventions in schools for at risk youth and social work graduate education. She enjoys the opportunity that research provides to work closely with diverse colleagues and members of the community who are interested in the education and success of disadvantaged youth.

Powers recently participated in an international symposium in Oxford focusing on school-based family counseling, and she has taught courses that include Antisocial and Aggressive Children & Adolescents, Child Mental Health: Theory and Practice, Foundations for Evidence-based Practice, and Social Work Practice with Individuals & Families.
