Boise State University College of Health Sciences Policy 219
Effective Date:
May 12, 2026
Last Revision Date:
April 29, 2026
Created April 2026 to adopt the University Policy on Teaching Faculty (Policy # 4730 – approved August, 2025) as the College of Health Sciences’ Teaching Faculty Policy, Policy #219, with the following two additions:
1. Workload
Baseline expectations for all full-time teaching faculty include teaching and service. The standard 9-month teaching assignment is four 3-credit courses per semester (4-4 load), which is generally equivalent to 80% of the total workload. The remaining workload is allocated to service (20%), though some allocation may be designated for scholarship (which includes professional development) per school/department discretion. Faculty are expected to maintain comparable effort among all responsibilities assigned. Refer to the COHS Faculty Workload Policy #218.
2. Promotion
2.1 Promotion Guidelines
Candidates for promotion must meet or exceed expectations in all areas, as dictated by their workload assignments and the appropriate college, School/Department, and guidelines. Each School/Department must develop its own Dean-approved promotion guidelines that further define the unit’s expectations regarding teaching, service, professional development, and/or scholarship. These guidelines shall be consistent with both college and university policies.
Guidelines are used to award promotion of rank, encourage, and reward faculty excellence. The guidelines presume that Teaching Faculty members are already highly motivated and look to the promotion guidelines for direction as they seek to serve in ways most valuable to their units, colleges, and the university.
Further, the guidelines provide a link between Teaching Faculty members’ workload assignments and their achievement of promotion. The guidelines must be sufficiently specific to ensure that Teaching Faculty members understand the relationship between the nature of their workload responsibilities and successful attainment of promotion, and also to ensure that the College of Health Science Promotion and Tenure Committee, as well as administrators, can understand these relationships and make judgments that remain consistent even as different people occupy these positions of responsibility.
However, the guidelines must also leave ample room for professional judgment by the faculty committee and administrators since each candidate for promotion presents a unique set of characteristics and services to the department/unit, college, and university.
2.2 Experience Requirements
The COHS Teaching Faculty Policy follows the University Teaching Faculty Policy 4730, with the following exception:
- Associate Teaching Professors may apply for promotion to Teaching Professor at the beginning of their fifth (5th) year in rank, after four (4) full years of service as an Associate Teaching Professor at Boise State, unless under extraordinary circumstances.
2.3 Promotion Folder
The COHS Teaching Faculty Policy follows the University Teaching Faculty Policy 4730 promotion folder requirements, with the following additions:
- A table of contents for the materials submitted
- A concise summary of activities that address the promotion criteria and evidence that describes how they have met or exceeded the requirements for all areas where they have workload allocated over the review period.
- All student/course evaluations with a narrative that addresses areas of strength and growth, specifically outlining how feedback was incorporated into teaching over time for the review period.
- A copy of the promotion policy under which the candidate is applying
2.4 Promotion Criteria by Rank
Each School/Department will create its own promotion criteria by rank, appropriate to its unit, as outlined in 2.1.
