Contraception

Contraception, or birth control, is a means to prevent pregnancy.

A variety of options exist:

  • Abstinence
  • IUD
  • Implant
  • Injection
  • Pill
  • Condom
  • Barrier
  • Vasectomy and tubal ligation

The choice of method depends on several factors and may rely on partner responsibility, one’s own responsibility, or both. The method used may also depend on medical history and risk factors. Finally, how well the method works depends on how well it is used – we all know that things happen!

While contraception prevents pregnancy, only a barrier method prevents the transmission of sexual infections. Annual screening for sexual diseases is recommended, as often there are no symptoms to indicate infection. Untreated sexual infections can cause problems in the future.

Health services staff can help you decide which contraceptive method is best for you. We offer counseling on contraception, and can provide the various contraceptive options with the exception of emergency contraception and surgical sterilization. We also offer full screening for sexually transmitted diseases with usually next-day results.
