Do I need permission to attend?

Yes. We encourage supervisors and employees to communicate regularly about training needs. It’s important that both employee and supervisor understand how a training activity can enhance performance or help individuals meet professional goals. We also recognize the importance of coordinating activities that take people out of the work area for a period of time.

How do I sign up for classes and workshops?

Go to Choose a category to view the workshops that are being offered. Then click on the workshop you are interested in attending, fill out the registration form and submit.

You will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours (or a notification that the class has already been filled). You’ll also receive a session reminder about a week before your workshop. If I register for a workshop, am I guaranteed a place in the workshop?

No. Many workshops have restricted attendance because of classroom limitations or certification requirements. General workshop enrollment is based on the old “first come, first served” principle. We can’t predict how many people will register so the sooner you register, the better your chances are you will get a place in the workshop you want. We will schedule and offer additional sessions for workshops with high demand.

Who pays the bill?

Usually your department will pay the cost of your training. There are times when a supervisor doesn’t feel it is appropriate for the department to pay for the training you want. Sometimes, however, when budgets are tight, a supervisor can support you with time away from work if you are willing to cover the cost of the training. Good communication is vital for both personal and professional needs to be met.

The best advice is: be strategic in your learning. Devote your training time and dollars to acquiring knowledge and skill that will make a clear positive difference in your current role, in addition to helping you grow in a direction important to you.
