Muscular Fitness

Muscular fitness assessments evaluate several aspects of physical performance, including maximal strength, explosive power, muscular endurance, and the ability to sustain or repeatedly produce force. Depending on the assessment, testing may examine short-duration anaerobic power, isometric strength, fatigue resistance, and how quickly force can be generated. These measures can help provide a broader picture of muscular function and physical capacity for general fitness, athletic performance, and training monitoring.

Anaerobic Power Testing

Anaerobic power testing assesses your ability to produce high levels of force and power during short-duration, high-intensity exercise. Tests such as the Wingate evaluate peak power, overall anaerobic capacity, and how quickly performance declines during a maximal effort.

Isometric Strength Testing

Isometric strength is the maximal force that a muscle group can exert in a fixed position. It can be performed to determine strength and muscular balance. Optimal strength and antagonistic muscle balance reduce injury risk and enhance performance. Examples of isometric strength tests include the abdominal, chest press, isometric mid-thigh pull, shoulder press, and upper back exercises, among others.

The most commonly performed strength assessments are the isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) and hand grip dynamometry. The IMTP measures maximal whole-body and lower-body force production, while hand grip dynamometry provides a quick and simple assessment of grip and upper-body strength.

Anaerobic Power Testing

The Wingate Anaerobic Power Test is used to assess peak anaerobic power, anaerobic fatigue, and total anaerobic capacity. These values can be used to more accurately prescribe optimum training intensities for aerobic events such as cycling and distance running, and for anaerobic events, i.e., sprinting. Other anaerobic performance tests are also available.

What to expect

A Wingate Test is a 30-second maximal effort performed on a stationary cycle ergometer to assess peak anaerobic power, anaerobic capacity, and fatigue. The full appointment typically takes 15–20 minutes and includes a warm-up, the maximal effort, and a guided cool-down.

Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull (IMTP)

The IMTP is a maximal strength assessment that measures how much force you can produce in a fixed, athletic position similar to the mid-point of a deadlift or clean. It is commonly used to assess lower-body and whole-body strength, peak force production, and an athlete’s ability to generate force rapidly.

What to expect

HPL staff will adjust the chain and bar height to ensure the correct testing position. You will then stand on the platform and pull upward against a fixed bar as hard and as fast as possible for 3–5 seconds. Several maximal efforts are completed with rest between each attempt, and the best trial is recorded. The test is brief and fully supervised by HPL staff to ensure safe, consistent technique.

Hand Grip Dynamometry

Hand grip dynamometry is a simple assessment of maximal grip strength using a handheld device. It provides a quick measure of hand and forearm strength and can also be used as a general indicator of upper-body muscular strength and overall physical function.

What to expect

You will hold a handheld dynamometer and squeeze as firmly as possible for a few seconds. Several attempts are typically completed with each hand, with brief rest between trials. The test is quick, non-invasive, and requires no special preparation.
