Register here for your group field trip to the Boise River banding station.
We welcome school groups, scouts, birdwatching groups, and more!
About this event:
Our team of biologists will be catching, banding, and releasing wild songbirds for 5 hours each morning as part of our standardized migration monitoring protocol. Plan to arrive before 10am and plan to stay at least an hour to have the best chance of seeing birds.
We can host groups of up to 20 students at the station at a time. If you have a larger group, please register for two separate banding days or email HeidiWare@boisestate.edu to learn about options for a “station rotation” field trip.
We have Education Station activities available for school trips. Email us for more details about our habitat restoration, camera trap, and creative writing activities.
This event is free! We never want cost to prevent anyone from experience these hands-on opportunities. This project is funded 100% by donations from visitors like you. Thank you!
We are thrilled to be able to host visitors again. Please be aware that our station guidelines may be amended with short notice following Boise State policy based on changes in COVID infection rates, the emergence of new variants, or changing local, state and federal guidelines. We will share any changes with registered visitors via email. Please follow all rules and signage posted to ensure we are able to continue to offer these visitor opportunities.
Attendees will be able to see songbirds up close as they are measured, weighed, and tagged by IBO biologists. Depending on how many birds we catch, visitors will be able to help release the birds by holding out their hand as a release platform.
All ages are welcome. This site is somewhat accessible for wheelchairs and other assistive devices (but please contact us for details).
Bird banding is unpredictable. We cannot promise that we will catch birds. If the weather is rainy or too hot/cold we may have to close our nets. However, the riparian vegetation at this site provides excellent habitat for songbirds, so chances are good you will see birds, especially if you arrive before 10am.
