Clayton Swanson, Ph.D., joined the faculty in the School of Kinesiology at Boise State University in 2025. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Swanson served as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Florida and a Research Health Scientist at the Brain Rehabilitation Research Center within the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida.
Dr. Swanson’s research focuses on understanding the neuromechanisms that underlie mobility, with an emphasis on improving walking function in individuals with neurological impairments. His work primarily targets older adults, people with multiple sclerosis, and individuals with various forms of cognitive impairment. His ongoing research incorporates neurorehabilitation, motor imagery (i.e., visualization-based practice), neuroimaging (MRI), non-invasive brain stimulation (tDCS and TMS), electrophysiology, and biomechanics. He is particularly interested in developing remote-deliverable interventions to help reduce access barriers and expand rehabilitation opportunities.
Dr. Swanson earned his M.S. in Health and Exercise Science and Ph.D. in Bioenergetics (with a focus in neuromechanics) from Colorado State University. His graduate work explored neuroanatomical and neurophysiological correlates of turning performance in both neurotypical and clinical populations.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, camping, fly-fishing, and exploring the outdoors.
