MakerLab Instruction Checklist

Boise State University faculty are welcome to request MakerLab instruction for their class, either during their regularly scheduled class time or a specific date/time of their choosing (subject to staff availability). As a liaison, you are responsible for taking the lead on incorporating the MakerLab into your information literacy instructional sessions.

Looking for inspiration for how to incorporate the MakerLab into your liaison subject? Check out the “Inspiration” page that will get your creativity flowing!

  • Meet with and/or converse with the faculty member requesting the instruction. Work collaboratively to determine the desired learning objectives.
    • Questions you might ask: What do you hope students will be able to do after the instruction session?
  • Reach out to makerlab@boisestate.edu to discuss or collaborate on the request. Doing this ensures that the MakerLab will have the necessary resources for the instructional session.
  • Depending on what the faculty member says (and what your skills and competencies are) backwards map an instruction plan with 2-3 learning objectives for a one-hour period. The Emerging Technologies and Experiential Learning Division encourage you to use the ACRL Framework when formulating learning objectives! Examples of learning objectives might include:
    • Students will exhibit mental flexibility and creativity;
    • Students will understand that information in any format is produced to convey a message and is shared via a selected delivery method;
    • Students will see themselves as contributors to the information marketplace rather than only consumers of it.
  • If the faculty member is requesting technical skills (e.g. editing audio in Audacity), have them reach out to MakerLab student employees who are competent in assisting with cultivating these skills.
  • Create your lesson plan! Be sure to check out the “Lesson Plan” page where you can download templates and modify past lesson plans.
  • If necessary, take some time to refresh on the MakerLab equipment you will be using.
  • Conduct your instructional session!
  • If you and the faculty member are comfortable with it, share your lesson plan with us so we can add it to the “Lesson Plan” page. This will help other librarians with incorporating the MakerLab into their instructional sessions.
