Boise State University and the Boise Public Library are teaming up to celebrate National Chemistry Week (October 20 – 24). This year’s theme, The Hidden Life of Spices, inspires a series of science demonstrations and discussions. Get ready to explore the worlds of biology and chemistry with fun, free events that dive into the flavor and power of molecules we use every day.
Events
Spicey, Sweet, and Hot. Oh My! The Biology of How We Taste Spices
Have you ever wondered why wasabi feels hot or how your tongue registers sweet? Dr. Allan Albig, professor of biology and author of “It’s Not Magic, It’s Biology,” will explain the intricate biology of how our sensory systems interpret molecules as sweet, spicey, and hot. May include a taste test of “magic berries!”
- When: 4 p.m., Monday, October 20
- Where: Library! At Bown Crossing
- Sponsors: Boise Public Library, Albertsons Library, the Department of Biology, and the Idaho Center of the Book
