This year\u2019s event takes place on Saturday, August 24 in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<h2>Great Reads from Great Places<\/h2>\n<p>Idaho\u2019s 2024 book selections are included on the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.loc.gov\/news\/library-of-congress-centers-for-the-book-choose--great-reads--titles-for-each-state--territory-for-2\/s\/cb738dbc-3aae-446b-ad5c-f9b98b90c697\">Library of Congress list of Great Reads From Great Places<\/a> and will be highlighted in the Roadmap to Reading section of the National Book Festival. The Great Reads initiative is a program of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/programs\/center-for-the-book\/about-this-program\/\">Center for the Book at the Library of Congress<\/a> honoring the country\u2019s regional literary heritage.<\/p>\n<h2>2024 Idaho Great Reads<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cFour Treasures of the Sky\u201d (adult selection) is a novel inspired by true events in Idaho history. The book\u2019s fictional heroine, Daiyu, is a young girl fighting to claim her own story after being kidnapped and smuggled from China to America in the 1880s. Daiyu eventually makes her way from San Francisco to Pierce, Idaho, just as anti-Chinese sentiment is sweeping across the country in the wake of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13376\" style=\"width: 176px\" class=\"wp-image wp-image--caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/668\/2024\/06\/Zhang_credit-Mary-Inhea-Kang_WP.jpg\" alt=\"Jenny Tinghui Zhang\" width=\"176\" height=\"220\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"width: 176px\">Jenny Tinghui Zhang<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Author Jenny Tinghui Zhang is a Chinese-American writer. Her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in Apogee, Ninth Letter, Passages North, The Rumpus, HuffPost, The Cut, Catapult, and elsewhere. She was born in Changchun, China and grew up in Austin, Texas, where she currently lives. \u201cFour Treasures of the Sky&#8221; was named a New York Times Notable Book and the Idaho Book of the Year in 2022. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestatepublicradio.org\/show\/idaho-matters\/2024-02-28\/four-treasures-of-the-sky-an-author-interview-with-jenny-tinghui-zhang\">Click here to listen to an interview with Zhang on Boise State Public Radio.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Her Story: Sacajawea\u201d (youth selection) is a children&#8217;s graphic novel about the journey of Sacajawea\u2013a brilliant, multilingual Shoshone girl who was torn from her home in present day Idaho at a young age. In 1804, she set out with the Lewis and Clark Expedition, acting as an interpreter and guide across hundreds of miles of unmapped land to reach the Pacific Ocean. The story is written from a tribal perspective by Randy&#8217;L Teton, and illustrated by tribal artist Aly McKnight, both enrolled members of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe of Fort Hall, Idaho.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13379\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13379\" style=\"width: 176px\" class=\"wp-image wp-image--caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/668\/2024\/06\/RandyL-Teton.jpg\" alt=\"Randy'L Teton\" width=\"176\" height=\"261\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"width: 176px\">Randy&#8217;L Teton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Author Randy\u2019L Teton has curated multiple exhibitions in Idaho highlighting Shoshone-Bannock history and culture. In 1998, she served as the official model for the U.S Native American Dollar coin featuring Sacajawea.
