{"id":5573,"date":"2023-02-02T14:20:31","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T21:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/library\/?p=5573"},"modified":"2026-01-23T11:26:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T18:26:17","slug":"national-holocaust-exhibit-coming-to-albertsons-library-spring-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/library\/2023\/02\/02\/national-holocaust-exhibit-coming-to-albertsons-library-spring-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Library to host Americans and the Holocaust exhibit this spring"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Albertsons Library was one of 50 U.S. libraries selected in 2019 to host<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/information\/exhibitions\/traveling-exhibitions\/americans-and-the-holocaust\"> Americans and the Holocaust<\/a>, a traveling exhibition from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/\">United States Holocaust Memorial Museum<\/a> in Washington D.C. The pandemic put the tour on hold, and we are now pleased to announce the exhibit will be on display from March 22 through April 26, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Americans and the Holocaust<\/em> examines the motives, pressures and fears that shaped Americans\u2019 responses to Nazism, war and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.&nbsp;The exhibition challenges the commonly held assumptions that Americans knew little and did nothing about the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews as the Holocaust unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on extensive new research of that period, <em>Americans and the Holocaust<\/em> addresses important themes in American history, exploring the many factors \u2014 including the Great Depression, isolationism, xenophobia, racism and antisemitism \u2014 that influenced decisions made by the U.S. government, the news media, organizations and individuals as they responded to Nazism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are so proud to be selected from a pool of more than 250 applicants to host this important and powerful exhibition,\u201d said the library&#8217;s dean, Tod Colegrove. &#8220;We encourage community members to come explore it, and we\u2019re excited to be partnering with local organizations to plan additional programming. The exhibition will challenge people to not only ask \u2018what would I have done?\u2019 but also, \u2018what will I do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Albertsons Library\u2019s application was submitted by archivist Gwyn Hervochon with support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wassmuthcenter.org\/\">Wassmuth Center for Human Rights<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabi-boise.org\/home.html\">Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel<\/a> and faculty from the Boise State history department. A series of related programming events are being developed in collaboration with community partners. The library\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/library\/americans-and-the-holocaust\">website<\/a> will post a schedule of events as soon as they are finalized. The exhibit is made possible by the generous support of lead sponsors Jeannie &amp; Jonathan Lavine. Additional major funding was provided by the Bildners \u2014 Joan &amp; Allen z\u201dl, Elisa Spungen &amp; Rob, Nancy &amp; Jim; and Jane and Daniel Och.
