Angeleita Floyd

Angeleita Floyd (she/her/hers), dynamic musician, highly respected conductor and educator, served as Professor of Flute at the University of Northern Iowa from 1986 to 2019.  With her unique flair for insightful teaching and sensitive musical interpretation, Dr. Floyd mentored numerous prize-winning students on a regional and national level, preparing a new generation of collegiate professors and esteemed musicians. As a frequent guest artist, favorite events include master classes for Passion Flute: Foundations for Creative Performing and directing Festival Flute Orchestras throughout the US, including appearances at International Flute Festivals in Sweden, Ecuador, Brazil, and Costa Rica. Currently, Dr. Floyd tours in collaboration with ZAWA! as coordinator and conductor for performances of numerous works written for ZAWA! featuring Folio’s musical meditation, Winds for Change: A Concerto for Two Flutes, Flute Ensemble, Percussion, and Electronics (2014).

Floyd holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Stetson University, where she studied with eminent British flutist Geoffrey Gilbert, followed by graduate degrees from Florida State University (MM, MMEd, DM) with Charles DeLaney. She is the author of the highly acclaimed flute method book, The Gilbert Legacy: Methods, Exercises, and Techniques for the Flutist (Winzer Press, LLC), currently in revision for a new 4th printing. Floyd has traveled the world sharing Gilbert’s transformational teaching and pedagogical methods. Founder and director of Winzer Press, LLC, she edited and published works by Trevor Wye, Marcel Moyse: An Extraordinary Man (1993) and Sheryl Cohen, Bel Canto Flute: The Rampal School (2003). Since 2021, Dr. Floyd has focused on extensive research for a 4th printing of The Gilbert Legacy: Methods Exercises, and Techniques for the Flutist, an updated, revised and expanded edition.

  Adding to her distinguished career, Dr. Floyd’s service to the National Flute Association includes President, Vice-President, Program Chair, Board of Directors, YAC and High School Soloist Coordinator, and current committee involvement. As a popular presenter/performer at NFA conventions, she has given master classes, lectures, and conducted the High School, Collegiate, Professional Flute Choirs, as well as the Flute Orchestra of the Americas. Under Dr. Floyd’s direction, UNI’s Northern Iowa Flute Choir performed by invitation at the 45th NFA Convention in Minneapolis, MN. 

Dr. Floyd’s honors include the NFA’s Distinguished Service Award (2013), UNI’s James F. Lubker Faculty Research Award (2013), the Iowa Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence (2014-15), and the John L. Baker Faculty Development Award (2017) for “exemplifying the highest standards of Professional Collegiality, Teaching and Scholarly/Creative Activity” given by the faculty of the UNI School of Music. Most recently, Dr. Floyd’s dedication to education was recognized through a 2021 Ovation Award by the Iowa Women’s Foundation.
