National Preparedness Month tips: Get to know campus spaces

The Department of Public Safety is offering tips each week of National Preparedness Month. For the final week, it’s time to put everything together.

We’ve talked about plans, resources, and people. Now, we encourage you to take one final, tangible step to increase your safety: physically get to know your campus spaces.

Take a minute to walk through your dorm, office, or classroom and actively look for these key safety features (resource locations, with the exception of evacuation routes, can also be found on the Campus Map):

  • Evacuation Routes: Reconfirm the primary and secondary escape routes.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Locate the nearest fire extinguisher.
  • Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs): Identify where the closest AED is located in your building.
  • Blue Light Phones: Be aware of the location of emergency call boxes and phones on campus sidewalks and in parking lots.
  • Refuge Phones: These are two-way, hands-free communication devices found in designated “areas of refuge” in multi-story buildings. During an emergency like a fire, these phones allow occupants who cannot use stairs to report their location and await rescue by communicating with Boise State Dispatch. These systems comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and building codes, ensuring that people with mobility challenges can receive assistance.
  • Narcan: Identify where the closest Narcan is located.

Making yourself familiar with these resources now will allow you to act quickly and confidently in an emergency. Being prepared is a shared responsibility, and every Bronco plays a vital role in keeping our community safe.
