Blue Turf Thinkers: the School of Public Service celebrates a decade of impact

At each Boise State home football game, the “Blue Turf Thinkers” series honors outstanding groups and initiatives on the world-renowned Blue Turf.

The Oct. 11 game’s “Blue Turf Thinkers” featured alumni, faculty and staff of the School of Public Service on the weekend of its 10th anniversary. Since its founding in 2015, the school has evolved from an early “experiment” into a vibrant interdisciplinary college preparing thousands of graduates to lead in the public, nonprofit and private sectors.

When Boise State launched the School of Public Service under President Bob Kustra, the design was intentionally different: rather than build traditional departmental silos, the school was structured more like a large, integrated department with programs, encouraging cross-collaboration among faculty, staff and students.

In its first 10 years, the School of Public Service has graduated thousands of students who are making impacts in communities throughout Idaho, the nation and beyond. These alumni lead careers in local, state and federal agencies, nonprofits, advocacy organizations, and more, embodying the school’s core values in problem solving and civic leadership. Over the past decade, the school has also expanded its commitment to offering experiential learning opportunities, integrating real-world projects, internships and research into curricula so students learn by doing.

To honor this milestone, the school held a number of events over homecoming weekend, including a celebratory gala in the Stueckle Sky Center and an alumni tailgate prior to Saturday’s football game.

As the School of Public Service enters a second decade, faculty and staff remain committed to its mission of preparing problem solvers and leaders through education, research and community engagement to tackle society’s challenges.
