Fátima Cornwall from the Department of World Languages and Diana Arbiser from the Federal Public Defender’s Office – District of Oregon co-presented at the American Translators Association’s 66th Annual Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, in October 2025. Their session, “Academia Meets the Real World: Collaborations Between Interpreters and Translators in Classroom Settings,” explored how academic and professional interpreting and translating experiences can come together to enrich student learning.
Cornwall and Arbiser are both state and federally certified court interpreters who frequently collaborate as co-interpreters in the courtroom and have presented together at several national conferences. Arbiser, an English–Spanish certified translator with the American Translators Association, is also a frequent guest speaker in Cornwall’s SPAN 481 Introduction to Court Interpreting, where she shares her expertise with students interested in translation and interpreting careers.
