University Distinguished Professor Matt Kohn from the Department of Geosciences received the Most Promising New Textbook award for his textbook “Petrology and Plate Tectonics,” written in collaboration with Allen Glazner from the University of North Carolina.

The Textbook & Academic Authors Association bestowed this award. In their comments about Kohn’s work, the judge remarked: “With strong visuals, thematic coherence and thoughtful application features, ‘Petrology and Plate Tectonics’ makes challenging petrology concepts accessible while never losing sight of the larger geologic story.”

“Petrology and Plate Tectonics” was one of just 11 textbooks to receive the award this year. In their press release, the Textbook & Academic Authors Association said: “The Most Promising New Textbook Award recognizes excellence in 1st edition textbooks and learning materials.”
