The seven-year accreditation follows an extensive spring 2026 review.
Accreditation is an independent check that a university is meeting defined standards and has processes in place for improvement. The 2026 process included a visit from a five-member peer evaluation team that gathered input from approximately 250 faculty, staff and students, as well as representatives from the State Board of Education who shared their thoughts in group meetings and open forums.
“I am grateful for the efforts that have gone into demonstrating the exceptional work done here at Boise State. Our reaffirmation of accreditation is the result of those contributions,” said Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Zeynep Hansen. “I also would like to recognize and thank our accreditation liaison officer, Dr. Shari Ellertson and the core team of facilitators, Dr. Susan Shadle, Dr. Scott Lowe, Kris Collins and Erin Muggli, as well as many others who worked with this core team and contributed to the two self-assessment reports in this process.”
Highlights
The evaluation noted the university’s ability to be “flexible, creative, nimble and resilient in a resource-constrained environment” and its adoption of the Blueprint for Success (the strategic plan outlining institutional goals). The Blueprint, evaluators said, “drives a student-first culture to which employees feel deeply connected. Faculty, staff and administrators know how their work supports the strategic plan and connects to student success.”
Boise State also earned high marks for having a transparent process that assesses programs and systematically uses evidence to enhance student learning and instructional quality. The university, reviewers said, shares data across internal and external platforms through robust dashboards and reports. Reviewers praised Boise State for a planning process that incorporates employee feedback into university governance, strategic planning and professional development opportunities.
Opportunities
Evaluators made one formal recommendation: that Boise State refine its operational systems and processes, for example, by examining its software platforms to reduce redundancy and implementing strategies to communicate decision-making processes more effectively. They wrote, “While the university has demonstrated proactive engagement during its leadership transition, including extensive stakeholder dialogue and full empowerment of interim leaders, formalizing the documentation, monitoring and communication of governance decisions may strengthen institutional confidence and ensure continuity beyond any individual appointment.”
Further, the evaluators encouraged Boise State to examine its software platforms and other systems to minimize redundancy and preserve efficiency and data integrity.
The evaluators also spoke to the progress made in student success and achievement while also encouraging additional focus areas. They wrote, “The peer-review team recognizes Boise State University’s meaningful progress in improving overall six-year graduation rates, with outcomes trending upward toward the institution’s 65% universal graduation goal.”
Boise State, evaluators said, should continue to strengthen its Strategic Enrollment and Retention Plan to demonstrate success for individual groups as well as improvements in aggregate outcomes.
“Reaffirmation of accreditation is an important milestone, but the real value of accreditation is in what we learn from the process,” Hansen said. “The team’s feedback both recognizes the progress Boise State has made and gives us valuable perspective as we continue strengthening the university and supporting student success.”
