Ted Apel, a teaching professor in the Department of Games, Interactive Media and Mobile Technology major presented his paper “Group Delay Manipulation for Creative Sound Transformation with the Giant FFT,” at the 29th International Conference on Digital Audio Effects (DAFx26), held Sept. 1-4, 2026 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
This work explores new ways of manipulating sound by treating time not as a position in a recording but as a property carried by each frequency in it. The method can reorder the notes of a melody, or unfold a single note into a sequence of its own overtones.
DAFx has been held annually since 1998 and is the main international venue for research on digital audio effects.
