Bacelar, an assistant professor of kinesiology, helps her students get to the bottom of questions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>If you say you want to exercise and don\u2019t, why is that? And what would change the situation for you?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How have you acquired a certain motor skill? Has motivation played a part?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How do rewards of various types shape your behavior?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How do you apply feedback to learn a certain skill? How do you translate that information into action?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bacelar&#8217;s lab was built when Bacelar joined Boise State in the fall of 2022 after completing her doctoral program at Auburn University. She serves as the lab\u2019s director. The lab\u2019s physical space opened this spring.<\/p>\n<p>Joined by six undergraduate students and one graduate student, she investigates questions related to motor skill acquisition and physical activity. They mostly focus on young adults, however, and as a result of a new grant, older adults will be the focus of study in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Because the team examines motor learning and physical activity using neuropsychological measures to uncover the neural mechanisms underlying these phenomena, the lab is housed in School of Kinesiology. But because human movement \u2013 and its hows and whys \u2013 is universal, the research and findings are important and applicable to most human endeavors.<\/p>\n<h2>Engaging student researchers<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1069651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1069651\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-image wp-image--caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1069651\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/164\/2024\/04\/SAP-4.jpg\" alt=\"photo\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1069651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"width: 400px\">Kinesiology master&#8217;s student Jet Taylor attaches electrodes to an EEG hat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Along with groundbreaking research, students who sign up for the lab experience also embark on other meaningful work. They\u2019re learning practical skills and helping to rebuild the credibility of the scientific community at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The student researchers learn how to apply behavioral and neurophysiological methods, such as electroencephalography (commonly referred to as EEG) to record brain activity and metascience techniques into research. They\u2019re also learning how to collect and analyze data, design experiments, present research findings, think critically and work as part of a research team. Every other week, student teams present on scientific articles with group discussions to follow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has a broader impact,\u201d Bacelar said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSome students may not know how important research is. Some people may associate this experience with wanting to become a researcher, but this helps develop a lot of skills. It\u2019s not necessarily \u2018for\u2019 research. It\u2019s \u2018through\u2019 research.\u201d<cite>\u2013Mariane Bacelar, assistant professor of kinesiology<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And while it\u2019s early days for the lab and lab findings, the lab is succeeding in the ways its director has envisioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still collecting data, but we have a couple of predictions,\u201d Bacelar said, adding that it has become apparent that a fundamental premise underpinning these parts of science is still, in fact, an open question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe often assume that motivation is associated with learning, but we\u2019re learning that it has not been established,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1069649\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1069649\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-image wp-image--caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1069649\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/164\/2024\/04\/SAP-3.jpg\" alt=\"photo\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1069649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"width: 450px\">Faculty Mariane Bacelar and kinesiology master&#8217;s student Jet Taylor study shuffleboard movement<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The lab is built on the concept of &#8220;open science,&#8221; the idea that science should be transparent, accessible and collaborative. Bacelar and many others are hopeful that these principles roll back some of the criticism and skepticism the sciences have faced in recent years, what she describes as a &#8220;replication crisis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to enhance reliability in our research findings,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need to be able to verify our findings, and we need to be transparent, and we need to have rigor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bacelar encourages students from across the university\u2019s disciplines to get involved \u2013 but there\u2019s a catch. Because she wants to ensure a quality experience, she\u2019s able to accept only a handful of student researchers. And this year\u2019s lab team will likely be next year\u2019s as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe welcome all types of researchers,\u201d she said. \u201cI think having research experience as an undergrad is valuable.
