{"id":1069804,"date":"2024-04-30T12:26:10","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T18:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/?p=1069804"},"modified":"2026-06-26T13:45:34","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T19:45:34","slug":"nursing-focused-on-evidence-based-practice-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/30\/nursing-focused-on-evidence-based-practice-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is the School of Nursing focused on evidence-based practice research?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-student-to-present-evidence-based-projects\">Student to present evidence-based projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students from across the School of Nursing will present their evidence-based practice projects at the <a href=\"https:\/\/mugamma.sigmanursing.org\/home\/new-item2\">Treasure Valley Nursing Research Conference<\/a> on May 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five undergraduate students were invited to present. Another four projects \u2013 representing the work of 12 of Boise State\u2019s nurse practitioner students \u2013 were also accepted to the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-1062963\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"664\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/164\/2023\/05\/WIN-23-Empathy-poster-sq664.jpg\" alt=\"Two women stand with a research poster featuring a Venn diagram between them. Most importantly, it signifies our nurse practitioner students have the ability and dedication to improve patient outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-evidence-based-practice\">What is Evidence-Based Practice?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthcare today is based on years of science from the past. Over time, common practices evolve as new discoveries are made about the most effective methods of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adapting clinical decisions based on evidence of positive patient outcomes is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursingworld.org\/content-hub\/resources\/workplace\/evidence-based-practice-in-nursing\/#:~:text=Besides%20keeping%20health%20care%20practices,of%20the%20science%20of%20nursing\">evidence-based practice<\/a>, or EBP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EBP research is one way to prioritize patient wellbeing. Instead of creating brand new studies to solve a healthcare problem, scholars evaluate and translate existing studies into actual practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students in Boise State\u2019s School of Nursing excel at this type of scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nurse-practitioner-students-dig-into-the-evidence\">Nurse practitioner students dig into the evidence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boise State\u2019s nurse practitioner coursework requires students to work together in small groups on EBP projects. They bring real-world solutions to real time problems, investigating an issue that they\u2019ve witnessed in their practice as registered nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-noticing-trends-and-digging-deeper\">Noticing trends and digging deeper<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jessica Cruz, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/2023\/05\/12\/nursing-in-mid-air-agnp-student-jamie-hutt\/\">Jamie Hutt<\/a> and Katie Tribley are all critical care nurses studying to become acute care nurse practitioners. For their EBP project, they looked at the benefit of using a specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/antifibrinolytic-agent\">anti-fibrinolytic medication<\/a> (known as TXA) in response to bleeding in the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team had noticed a trend in healthcare providers ordering TXA for <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/14480-brain-bleed-hemorrhage-intracranial-hemorrhage\">intracranial hemorrhage<\/a> cases. But at the time they selected their topic, the protocols of Tribley\u2019s current employer were to avoid giving TXA to patients with isolated head trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought it was intriguing,\u201d Tribley said, wondering if the research around TXA and head trauma cases had changed. The group decided to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-1069816\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/164\/2024\/04\/2023_AGNP_Intensives-6-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Two nurse practitioner students practice simulated incisions at a table in a sterile lab setting\" class=\"wp-image-1069816\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In addition to evidence-based practice projects, Boise State&#8217;s nurse practitioner coursework also includes hands-on training once a year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TXA helps blood clot, so \u201cit made sense to me that TXA would have a reduction on hemorrhage size when given to any patient with hemorrhage,\u201d said Tribley. \u201cHaving said that, I was surprised the numbers were not as drastic as I had expected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their research suggested that although none of the patients\u2019 hemorrhages increased in size, they didn\u2019t always have a significant decrease, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tribley is grateful \u201cfor the opportunity to deep dive into evidence-based research\u201d as part of her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing-bsdnp\/\">nurse practitioner education<\/a> at Boise State. Over her decade in the field, she has noticed nursing practices \u201cchange drastically\u201d because of EBP, from new medications to improved protocols and procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI find it fascinating to witness these changes and I am enthused to be a part of guiding the future of nursing as an advanced practice provider,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-evidence-based-at-every-level-of-education\">Evidence-based at every level of education<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence-based practice projects aren\u2019t limited to nurse practitioner students or the pre-license program. Boise State students in the Online RN-BS Completion program and those earning their Doctor of Nursing Practice degree also rely on EBP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-not-just-for-graduate-students\">Not just for graduate students<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alissa Godinez is a student in the Online RN-BS Completion program who worked as a licensed practical nurse while enrolled in classes. Thanks to the required research assignments in her program, she has a \u201cbetter understanding\u201d of EBP, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-1069817\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"715\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/164\/2024\/04\/AG-headshot-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Alissa Godinez wears her regalia on a sunny sidewalk outside with trees in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-1069817\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alissa Godinez graduates from the Online RN-BS Completion program in May 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe National Library of Medicine is your best friend in this program,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/2024\/03\/19\/rn-bs-serves-idaho-and-beyond\/#:~:text=Alissa%20Godinez\">Godinez said<\/a>. \u201cYou have to cite everything under the sun, and the NLM and I have become best friends. But it&#8217;s really nice, because now I use that in my practice, even when patients ask me a question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Godinez recalls a time when she pointed a patient toward scholarly databases for answers instead of relying on general online search engines. She also taught them how to find relevant information within academic research articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning about EBP helped Godinez \u201cunderstand the why\u201d behind her work as a nurse. \u201cFor me, it&#8217;s been really nice to actually see \u2018Okay, this is the actual research that was done for [practitioners] to get to this point,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scholarship-for-patient-centered-care\">Scholarship for patient-centered care<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program present their scholarly projects \u2013 which are also evidence-based \u2013 at the end of their program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-1069818\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"664\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/164\/2024\/04\/IMG_4377-sq664.jpg\" alt=\"Eight Doctor of Nursing Practice students pose together in the lobby of Albertsons Library.\" class=\"wp-image-1069818\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Weelborg (far right) received a Presidential Scholar award for her project after participating in the Graduate Student Showcase.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar to a dissertation, their EBP projects represent the culmination of their doctoral studies. This year, graduating students held a public poster presentation event in Albertsons Library and participated in the virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/graduatecollege\/showcase\/\">graduate student showcase<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two students, Nikki Graham and Rheza Agtarap, won the College of Health Sciences awards for their work, and Sara Weelborg received a Presidential Scholar Award. This honor distinguishes her for her project entitled, \u201cPromoting Awareness and Knowledge of Nutrition as an Adjunctive Treatment Option for Chronic Insomnia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-1069820\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"664\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/164\/2024\/04\/2024_Spring-DNP-Poster-Presentations058-sq664.jpg\" alt=\"Doctoral nursing student demonstrates her phone to someone standing by her research paper\" class=\"wp-image-1069820\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">During their on-campus immersion, this year&#8217;s graduating cohort of the online Doctor of Nursing Practice program presented their work at Albertsons Library.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe most rewarding parts of my scholarly project were forming and working with the multidisciplinary committee and observing the effects of its work,\u201d Weelborg said. \u201cThe education module we produced was very well received, led to robust discussions, and directly impacted provider knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weelborg is an adult psychiatric nurse practitioner who implements EBP for patients with mental health challenges.
