Preceptor Roles & Responsibilities

  • Preceptors can anticipate a commitment of 180-240 hours. Rotation schedules are built by the students working with and around the schedule that works best with the preceptor’s schedule and availability.
  • Preceptors may be eligible for affiliate faculty status. Affiliate faculty do not have formal teaching responsibilities on or off campus and are not financially compensated by the University. However, they contribute to academic programs by supporting classroom, online, clinical, or laboratory instruction. Affiliate faculty are also granted access to the University library. Affiliates, Affiliate Faculty, and Volunteers (University Policy 7035) If you are interested in being an affiliate faculty, please contact the Clinical Placement Team.
  • When a student has completed 50% of their hours, you will be asked to complete a mid-semester evaluation on the student’s progress using the Reporter, Interpreter, Manager, Educator (RIME) model. At the conclusion of the rotation, preceptors will complete a final evaluation of the student.  Instructions for completing this evaluation will be sent to the preceptor from the Clinical Placement Team.
  • Boise State uses Typhon Group’s Nurse Practitioner Student Tracking (NPST) System, an internet-based system to evaluate student’s clinical competencies at the conclusion of each clinical rotation. The preceptor will be sent instructions and Typhon login information to complete this evaluation near or at the conclusion of the student’s rotation.
  • In alignment with recommendations from the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and State Boards of Nursing, faculty also conduct site visits to support and assess the clinical learning environment. A site visit may be conducted by a Boise State faculty member or adjunct instructor during the student’s rotation. If a visit is scheduled, the instructor will communicate with you in advance to coordinate the details. Site visits may be virtual or in person. Graduate Program Clinical Site Visit Form
  • If the preceptor and student have not connected before the start of the rotation, the clinical placement team will facilitate an introduction.
  • Faculty, students, and preceptors are expected to meet three times during the semester. The initial meeting, held at the beginning of the term, serves as an introduction and an opportunity to exchange contact information and establish the student-preceptor connection. A mid-semester check-in may be conducted as needed, and a final meeting at the end of the rotation is held to review and discuss the student’s clinical performance and evaluation.
  • Clinical faculty maintain regular contact with each student throughout the semester. At the start of the term, they also reach out to preceptors to introduce themselves and share their contact information. Faculty communicate with preceptors at a minimum of three key points: the beginning, middle, and end of the semester. They are available throughout the rotation to support preceptors, foster student engagement, and ensure a meaningful and effective clinical experience.
  • Preceptors are encouraged to reach out to clinical faculty at any time during the rotation if a student is not meeting performance expectations.
