Student Expectations
- Students will complete a minimum of 780 hours of clinical time. Students will complete 3 rotations of 180 hours and a final rotation of 240 hours.
- Students will collaborate with their preceptor to develop a clinical schedule based on the preceptor’s availability, in order to minimize disruption to the preceptor’s workflow.
- Students are not permitted to attend clinical rotations when the University is not in session, including federal holidays. However, weekend and evening clinical hours are allowed. Students should maintain regular communication with their clinical faculty regarding their clinical schedules.
- Some clinical sites may require students to purchase and update an additional compliance tracking system, such as MyClinicalExchange or CPNW.
- Students may work with multiple preceptors during a single rotation. Please consult the Clinical Placement Team for guidance if this applies to your situation.
- Students are required to complete an evaluation of the preceptor and the clinical site.
- Boise State maintains a database of clinical sites and preceptors to assist with placement, but students are also expected to actively seek and reach out to potential preceptors as needed.
- Certain sites may require a rotation application or additional documentation. Once a student has identified a preceptor or if a site communicates specific requirements, the Clinical Placement Team will provide the necessary paperwork.
- Some sites may also require onboarding or training on the student’s first day. While this time does not count toward total clinical hours, it is a mandatory part of the site’s process.
- Once a student has completed all required clinical hours, they should notify the Clinical Placement Team so that the end-of-rotation evaluation can be sent to the preceptor.
- Students are responsible for recording case and time logs in Typhon, following the course-specific requirements. Students must document patient encounters within 7 days of the encounter or the student will not be given credit for the shift time. The faculty will review and approve all entries in the system.
- To help ensure a high-quality clinical experience and support your professional growth, all students are required to complete a midterm evaluation once 50% of their clinical hours are completed. This evaluation allows both you and your preceptor to reflect on your progress, identify strengths, and make any needed adjustments to enhance your learning experience. Please upload a copy of your completed midterm evaluation to Canvas and Typhon. This is a pass/fail requirement. Completing this step is an important part of meeting CCNE, NONPF, and AACN accreditation standards and helps us confirm that each clinical site is providing a meaningful learning environment.Delays in completing or submitting the evaluation(s) will result in course failure and may also delay your progression in the program.

- Documentation of joint faculty, preceptor, and student meeting(s) regarding student progress in clinical courses.
- Documentation of preceptor(s) and faculty interactions to determine needs, information, and support to improve experiences for preceptor and/or student.
