Marla Murphy Craft RN, MSN, CNL brings many years of deep clinical nursing experience to her role as Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at Boise State. She has navigated highly complex acute care environments with roles in Cardiac, Intensive care, Emergency and Specialty Cardiac Program leadership. She understands the importance of nurses in maintaining a patient and family focused approach to whole person care.
Marla raised 3 boys with her husband Scott. She and Scott recently moved to Boise to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. They spend their free time kayaking, rafting, camping and cycling.
Marla completed a Bachelor’s in Philosophy with a focus in Personnel Management at Miami University of Ohio. After 5 years she transitioned to a career in Nursing after completing her Bachelor of Nursing at St. Louis University Accelerated Nursing Program. In 2008 Marla completed her graduate studies in Nursing at the University of Portland and is Board Certified as a Clinical Nurse Leader. These studies empowered her to lead a multidisciplinary team at the Providence Heart Institute to bring groundbreaking non-surgical treatment of Heart Valve Disease. This program grew rapidly and has been a national leader among similar programs.
Marla has been honored throughout her career including an early distinction as Nurse Educator of the year at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, GA., leading efforts to educate patient and families in the early days of open-heart surgery. Marla collaborated with Emergency Department colleagues at Providence to publish “Are Temporal Artery Temperatures Accurate enough to replace Rectal Temperature Measurement in Pediatric ED Patients”. Marla practiced at the highest Clinical Ladder level throughout her clinical bedside nursing experience. Later in her career, Marla was awarded Nurse of the month at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR for her coordination of acute heart attack response.
Healthcare has undergone enormous change in the past decade. Increasingly complex treatments, procedures and medical devices have often left patients and families confused and frustrated. Marla has effectively collaborated with healthcare colleagues to prioritize a strong patient/family connection. She is a passionate educator and instrumental in developing educational curricula for patients, families and care Providers to facilitate growth and quality programs. Marla is first and foremost a patient advocate. She brings this passion to her role as an educator of future nurses.
