I’m Craig Poole and I live in Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. My nursing background started off with graduation from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va., (ODU) in 1984 from which I joined the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHS) and was first assigned to the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, AK. This was an exciting introduction into multi-cultural care that has followed my career as a nurse.
Following Sitka I was assigned as a Health Services Officer for two different National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin (NOAA) ships, both stationed in the pacific, where I was the primary health provider for ship’s crew members and was able to combine my love for the ocean and ships with my job as a nurse. My last position with PHS was a radical change, sent to NY City where I was one of the clinical staff for an INS Detention Center in the heart of SOHO / Manhattan.
Leaving the PHS I took a position at the Veterans Administration (VA) NY Harbor Health Care system in NY City where over 10 years I worked as an ER Nurse, Informatics Nurse and finally as a Home Care Case Manager and visiting nurse practitioner. Our small team provided primary care to elderly and disabled veterans living mostly in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. I graduated with an MSN as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner from Hunter College, City University of New York in 2000.
I was able to retire in 2003 after completion of 30 years active federal service, went sailing for a couple of years sabbatical and returned to work as an ER nurse traveler and then Home Care case manager with a privately held home care company in Wilmington, De. It’s been an exciting 27 years of nursing and I’m now really happy to be able to share my experiences with students as an instructor.
I have taught for Chamberlain College of Nursing (Health Information Systems, Evidence Based Practice and Community Health Nursing); also for Purdue University – Calumet (Nursing Theory) and now I’m glad to be joining the team at Boise State.
