{"id":193895,"date":"2022-12-06T13:26:16","date_gmt":"2022-12-06T20:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/?p=193895"},"modified":"2026-08-06T20:59:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T02:59:34","slug":"first-year-of-new-admissions-process-wraps-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/2022\/12\/06\/first-year-of-new-admissions-process-wraps-up\/","title":{"rendered":"First year of new admissions process wraps up at School of Nursing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end of this semester marks one full year implementing a two-step, comprehensive admissions process for the on-campus bachelor\u2019s degree program at the School of Nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what is a \u201ccomprehensive\u201d process, and how does it impact students applying to the program?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-does-it-mean\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does it mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A comprehensive view of an applicant takes into consideration their whole person. This means not just their grade point average (GPA) or book smarts, but also their character and skills. Practically speaking, it means applicants undergo an interview process in addition to a transcript review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-does-it-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does it work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many comprehensive admissions processes involve multiple stages that combine objective and subjective components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase 1 at Boise State is the objective GPA qualification; students must meet a minimum requirement to be considered for the program. While GPA is not the sole determinant of acceptance, it does count for 40% of the admissions process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-193898\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2022\/12\/MG_4800-sq.jpg\" alt=\"A woman sits in front of a computer screen that has a video of a student talking on it.\" class=\"wp-image-193898\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prospective students submit video interviews as part of the holistic admission process.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an effort to set students up for success; nursing school is academically rigorous, and students need to know they\u2019re going to be expected to work hard in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase 2 is a subjective, multi-part interview stage. Students answer two written prompts to explain their motivation behind choosing the field of nursing and their interest in wider community healthcare issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students also answer five questions about their skills and experiences through a video recording interview. Questions cover the topics of compassionate care, cultivating community, ethics, resiliency and professionalism. The School of Nursing chose these five components based on general characteristics they view necessary for all nurses to hold, as well as those that represent the identity of Boise State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-the-switch\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the switch?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since nursing is a clinical profession, effective nurses require not only academic skills proven through exams, but also \u201csoft skills\u201d such as empathy, teachability and effective communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou want your nurses to have all of these qualities,\u201d said Candice Johnson, the School of Nursing senior business operations manager. \u201cHow do we know we&#8217;re getting that just because they have a high GPA?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More and more nursing schools use some kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.utah.edu\/programs\/bs\/fall-spring\/application\">multi-stage application process<\/a> in a move away from strictly GPA-based admissions in order to assess these other kinds of skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea is that students who may not have a perfect 4.0 on their transcript may have other extraordinary qualities they can showcase in the interview process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was excited for the process because before it was just numbers,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cBy doing the interviews, [students] are able to come in and tell us why they would be the best candidates in the program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-should-students-care\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why should students care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the on-campus nursing program is competitive, it\u2019s common for students to retake prerequisites multiple times in order to earn the highest grade possible. Hopefully, by lowering the emphasis on GPA, the new process will decrease this habit and save students time and money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-193900\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2022\/12\/D_1907_019_024-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"A classroom full of nursing students raising their hands. Buster Bronco sits among them\" class=\"wp-image-193900\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Admission into the on-campus nursing program is not 100% dependent on a student&#8217;s GPA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor students who are taking their classes five times in order to get that GPA, it should stop that redundancy,\u201d Assistant Professor Sarah Llewellyn said. Llewellyn sat on the faculty committee evaluating applications this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the new process allows students to get a feel for what a Boise State nursing education will be like before being admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In classes, faculty often encourage students not to stress out about earning perfect grades. But Llewellyn said students often push back with statements like, \u201cIf I didn&#8217;t have a 4.0 I wouldn&#8217;t get into this program, and now you&#8217;re telling me not to worry about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the application process more accurately reflects the Boise State School of Nursing culture and values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re sending the message that that&#8217;s part of what we want, but not the only thing we care about,\u201d Llewellyn said. \u201cIt matters if you&#8217;re learning the material, if you&#8217;re preparing for your profession, if you&#8217;re showing professionalism and ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This glimpse into the school\u2019s values can help students make a better-informed decision about if the school is the right fit for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-does-this-mean-for-the-future\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does this mean for the future?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the school finished a full year using comprehensive admissions, it\u2019s still too early to assess how incoming cohorts may be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re going to have to wait a while to truly see a difference, because a lot of students historically didn&#8217;t apply because they knew that our admission was only one way,\u201d Llewellyn said. \u201cAs word gets out, hopefully a few semesters down the road, we&#8217;ll see more of the true impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incorporating this process is also one way the School of Nursing aligns itself with the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/saem\/serp\/\">Student Engagement and Retention Plan (SERP)<\/a>.
