It\u2019s a tradition rooted in students\u2019 desire for a more intimate event to share their excitement and achievements with those closest to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This December, the school celebrated a total of 310 students from across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing-bsnp\">on-campus bachelor\u2019s<\/a> program, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing-rnbs\/\">RN-BS<\/a> program and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing-bsdnp\/\">Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner<\/a> (AGNP) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This cohort of on-campus bachelor\u2019s graduates actually began their program with an unexpected twist; they started off campus in the fall of 2020 due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-193987\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2022\/12\/A-Bartlett-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Angie Phillips claps for Ashton Bartlett, who stands on stage with her escort.\" class=\"wp-image-193987\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ashton Bartlett (second from right) and the other bachelor degree candidates received their apricot-colored stoles during Convocation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a really intense experience for sure,\u201d said Ashton Barlett, a member of the on-campus cohort. \u201cEverybody I\u2019ve talked to has gone through a lot of struggles with this process, the pandemic and being in school on top of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For graduating senior Camren Blake, nursing school started out very frustrating. As students were able to assemble on campus again, \u201cit got better when you were in class with people,\u201d Blake said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bartlett agreed; being in-person made a huge difference for the rest of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith so many ups and downs, I think that we\u2019re all just excited to be here [at Convocation],\u201d Bartlett said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-congratulations-and-a-call-to-action\">Congratulations and a call to action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-193983\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"881\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2022\/12\/S-Shawver-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Stephanie Shawver stands on stage as AGNP professors arrange her hood.\" class=\"wp-image-193983\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">AGNP faculty hood Stephanie Shawver (second from right) during the Convocation ceremony.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/convocation\/\">Convocation also includes<\/a> two keynote speakers from the student body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AGNP graduate Stephanie Shawver spoke about the history of advocacy in nursing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/womens-history\/florence-nightingale-1\">Florence Nightingale<\/a> up through the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI challenge you to continue advocating not only for yourself and your patients, but for nursing practice,\u201d Shawver said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have come so far, but we still have far to go&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite><cite>Stephanie Shawver<\/cite><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> \u201cWe worked so hard \u2013 and we succeeded \u2013 despite the unexpected challenges of a pandemic that left devastation and burnout in its wake,\u201d she said. \u201cDespite our individual and shared challenges, we conquered and overcame, and that is no small feat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-193988\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2022\/12\/A-Timoney-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Amanda Timoney gives address from behind a podium.\" class=\"wp-image-193988\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Amanda Timoney (left) addresses the graduates as one of the two student speakers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amanda Timoney, an RN-BS graduate, followed Shawver\u2019s address with reflections on the graduates\u2019 successes and the early days of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt that time, I could only dream of an evening like this,\u201d Timoney said. \u201cAn evening that is not hindered with the fear of the unknown, but rather filled with the tenacity to meet it head on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reflection-recognition-and-readiness\">Reflection, recognition and readiness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school also awarded its inaugural Daisy Awards during the event. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daisyfoundation.org\/daisy-award\">Daisy Foundation<\/a> partners with thousands of organizations across the globe to recognize outstanding nurses through this award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s Daisy Award for Extraordinary Faculty honored the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/news\/2022\/10\/24\/school-of-nursing-remembers-rachel-finnell\/\">Rachel Finnell<\/a> for her incredible influence on students and colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-193989\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"890\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2022\/12\/Y-Espinoza-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Yessie Espinoza with student Daisy Award and a bouquet of flowers.\" class=\"wp-image-193989\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yessie Espinoza is the first recipient of Boise State&#8217;s Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing Student.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing Student went to Yessie Espinoza. Those who nominated her said that she constantly took opportunities to be motivational and encouraging, building up those around her while setting an amazing example of hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Convocation is a time to reflect on the vital roles of everyone from office staff to financial supporters; the event celebrates the reality that it truly \u201ctakes a village\u201d to develop future nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStarting school during COVID? Totally not ideal,\u201d said Margaret Quatraro, a member of the on-campus bachelor\u2019s cohort.
