With a background in acting, she brings art, communication, education and nursing science into one role at the School of Nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lo is the standardized patient program director and SP educator for the Simulation Center. \u201cSP\u201d is an industry-standard term for both standardized and simulated patients. These are individuals who portray patients so students can develop their clinical communication skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is essentially acting,\u201d Lo said. However, she is quick to emphasize: \u201cIt&#8217;s not our job to deliver an academy award performance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-194543\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1300\" height=\"867\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/03\/madam-mao-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"A woman sits in front of a camera which projects a larger image of herself in the background\" class=\"wp-image-194543\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lo acting in a play she produced and co-created called &#8220;Madame Mao&#8221;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, SPs must adapt during the simulation and respond to students in the most appropriate way for their learning. Lo explains it like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet&#8217;s say that I&#8217;m playing a really, really intense role where I&#8217;m upset and I&#8217;m crying, and the student is struggling with that. If I was just an actor, I\u2019d continue to do what I&#8217;m doing. As a standardized patient, if I see that they&#8217;re struggling with that, I may help them out a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, an SP\u2019s job is more back-and-forth communication and less one-way performance, much like improvisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to see how they&#8217;re interacting with us on a human level,\u201d Lo said. \u201cAs a standardized patient, we have to be pliable that way and know who our audience is, and really, our role in the room is to give the student the opportunity to learn and practice their skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But before Lo ever began educating, she was acting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-from-stage-to-simulation-center\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">From stage to Simulation Center<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lo began her career primarily as a stage actor in Toronto. But she knew she would need what she called a \u201csurvival job\u201d \u2013 steady income that paid the bills and put food on the table. \u201cIt made sense to become a standardized patient,\u201d she said. So for ten years, that\u2019s what she did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere was enough work in Toronto for me to make a living as a standardized patient,\u201d Lo said. \u201cIt was a lot of juggling \u2013 you have to be really organized \u2013 and I always had a big calendar beside the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-194545\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1300\" height=\"831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/03\/Hot-Asian-Doctor-Husband-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Janet Lo stands in blue lighting on a stage with two other women.\" class=\"wp-image-194545\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lo (right) performing with the Alley Repertory Theater at the Visual Arts Collective in Garden City this past fall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later when her family moved to Boise, the first thing Lo did was google: Boise standardized patients. \u201cSure enough, the School of Nursing had a standardized patient program,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I called them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lo soon established herself as a regular SP at the school. She also found jobs at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine and in corporate simulations doing similar SP work with managers and executives. \u201cThat&#8217;s where I learned how to give really good, effective feedback,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lo soon became an expert in the craft, developing top-notch skills in organization and communication, and training other SPs in how to give effective feedback. It didn\u2019t take long for others at the School Nursing to notice her skillset, and she soon found herself in her current full-time position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now she spends her days immersed in the world of standardized patients, from scheduling to training and scenario preparation. The most recent in-person training session Lo led included tips for memorization and feedback, a refresher on syncing one\u2019s demeanor and dialogue \u2013 an essential skill for non-actor SPs \u2013 and improvisation. Lo also helped create educational videos to demonstrate unfamiliar physical signs\/symptoms that an SP might have to portray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-effective-communication-for-effective-education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effective communication for effective education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For SPs at the School of Nursing, \u201ca big part of what we also do is we give [students] feedback that they&#8217;re probably not going to get in the clinical setting,\u201d Lo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most helpful feedback is the most specific, so SPs must be able to split their attention between what\u2019s happening in the fictional simulation and what teachable feedback they want to remember for the end of the scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-194544\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1300\" height=\"783\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/03\/georgia1-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Janet Lo wears a grey wig and pink bathrobe, sitting at a table talking to a propped-up tablet.\" class=\"wp-image-194544\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lo portrays &#8220;Georgia Taylor&#8221; as a standardized patient in the Simulation Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we&#8217;re standardized patients, we\u2019re also educators,\u201d Lo said. \u201cWe\u2019re part of their learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides the fact that manikins can\u2019t offer feedback, employing standardized patients also enhances the realism of the simulation. They provide an environment one step down from the clinical setting that still incorporates the very human elements of body language, inflection and emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExperiential learning is a really effective way to teach our nursing students how to become good nurses,\u201d Lo said. \u201cIt gives them the opportunity to practice skills in a safe environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lo used the example of students learning to break bad news to a patient or their family: \u201cIf you already had the opportunity in a simulated environment to give bad news, maybe next time you can formulate your thoughts better, listen more, and communicate in a more effective way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-educating-as-an-artist\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Educating as an artist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to her role at the Simulation Center, Lo remains active in the arts. Most recently, she wrote and acted in a play featured in a Toronto festival, acted in a film slated for release on Netflix next December, and she is performing with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bctheater.org\/\">Boise Contemporary Theater<\/a> in an upcoming show \u2018The Christians\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-194541\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/03\/pay-the-ghost-still-web-opt-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"Janet Lo wears a red vest looking shocked in a dimly lit kitchen.\" class=\"wp-image-194541\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A still frame of Lo acting in &#8220;Pay the Ghost&#8221;, a horror film released in 2015 starring Nicholas Cage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people ask Lo for advice as an artist, her automatic reply is always the same: be good with money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs an artist, it&#8217;s feast or famine,\u201d she said. Needing steady income is what led her into SP work; now thanks to her full-time position, she doesn\u2019t need to stress about days of \u201cfamine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot worrying about money has freed me up creatively,\u201d Lo said, describing the reciprocal relationship of her work. She performed the play in a festival this past February in Toronto.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Lo feels delighted to be in the university setting after becoming an expert not by structured academia, but by firsthand experience and \u201clearning as I went,\u201d she said. She\u2019s finding her place in the School of Nursing and recognizes her value to the Simulation Center. Although much of her work goes on behind the scenes, Lo loves training other SPs to be the best educators they can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of Lo\u2019s work, the center\u2019s team never has to worry if their SPs are good enough; because of Lo, they know they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJanet [Lo] has built our standardized patient program from a small pool of minimally-trained medical actors to a large team of organized, regularly reviewed, and specialized professionals,\u201d said Casey Blizzard, the operations coordinator at the Simulation Center. \u201cHer ongoing work is invaluable to the Boise State simulation department and continues to improve our health science educational programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a class=\"c-btn c-btn--border\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/healthsciences-simulation\/\">Learn more about the Simulation Center<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Janet Lo, \u201cinterdisciplinary\u201d is just another word for everyday.
