After seven years working in various intensive care units at St. Luke\u2019s and building a strong resum\u00e9 for critical care, her dream came true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m drawn to wanting to know how to handle any kind of emergency situation,\u201d she said. \u201cI&#8217;ve always been drawn to it, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194764\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-image wp-image--caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/05\/JH-and-fam-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Jamie Hutt sits with her two kids in a helicopter.\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"width: 400px\">Although her demanding work schedule is hard on her family, Hutt said her kids are used to her being a Life Flight nurse now. \u201cThey think it&#8217;s cool,\u201d she said.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeflight.org\/about\/\">Life Flight<\/a> nurse, Hutt is on call for 24 hour shifts. When a call comes in, the crew \u2013 the pilot, plus a nurse and paramedic or two nurses \u2013 head to where they\u2019re needed as fast as they\u2019re able. Life Flight\u2019s target is eight minutes to departure for helicopter, 20 minutes for plane. The time varies per call, Hutt explained, because of factors like weather or Air Traffic Control. \u201cBut we\u2019re always at the ready,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hutt\u2019s job allows her to play a unique role in helping the community, bringing care to where it might not readily be available.<\/p>\n<p>Although working in intensive care units helps nurses prepare for Life Flight work, the job requires a heightened sense of immediacy \u2013 what does the patient need right now that will save their life?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#8217;s important to transport care is keeping them safe,\u201d Hutt said.<\/p>\n<p>Flight nursing comes with its own unique challenges, since the work environment is such close quarters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking in a small area where you can&#8217;t reach for something easily, that&#8217;s when I get most frustrated,\u201d Hutt said. \u201cPutting something in the right place really makes a difference. So it&#8217;s all about planning and being prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-image wp-image--no-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-194765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/05\/Helio-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Life Flight helicopter sits on a bluff overlooking mountains and evergreen trees.\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/figure><p>Though many people think \u201clife flight\u201d is synonymous with \u201ccritical care,\u201d Hutt explained that not every call addresses a life-threatening situation. Sometimes their role is simply to go where ambulances can\u2019t, like picking up an isolated hiker with a broken leg.<\/p>\n<p>With so many outdoor activities in rural Idaho and the surrounding states, Hutt recommends an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeflight.org\/membership\/#pricing\">Air Ambulance membership<\/a> for anyone particularly outdoorsy. Hutt is also quick to encourage the community to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeflight.org\/contact\/\">get in contact with Life Flight<\/a> even if you\u2019re not 100% certain you\u2019ll need them. \u201cWe&#8217;re happy to come and assess,\u201d she said. \u201cNever hesitate to call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other times, Life Flight transports patients from one hospital to another, acting as a bridge in the patient\u2019s care plan. One inherent challenge of the job, then, is not being able to follow up on a patient\u2019s progress once the team passes them off. Not getting closure can be difficult, Hutt said, so she focuses on doing her best in the moments she has with patients.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-image wp-image--no-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-194766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/05\/JH-selfie-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"Selfie of Jamie Hutt in the helicopter wearing her helmet and flight suit.\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt fulfills me internally that I get to be there for these people during the worst day of their life, a lot of times,\u201d she said. \u201cThe most rewarding is making someone comfortable in the flight, making sure they&#8217;re pain free and they&#8217;re not scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now studying to earn her nurse practitioner license, Hutt loves learning and loves her job; she learns something new every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can have really slow shifts, and that can get long, but there&#8217;s endless amounts of education available,\u201d she said. \u201cIt&#8217;s continuous learning, and there&#8217;s always something to improve on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-btn c-btn--border\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/2023\/05\/12\/celebrating-nurses-week-2023\/\">Read more stories from Nurses Week 2023<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jamie Hutt always dreamed of being a Life Flight nurse.
