For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/2023\/04\/13\/marilyn-omallon-to-retire\/\">retiring associate professor and director<\/a> of the RN-BS Completion program Marilyn O\u2019Mallon, she found a service outlet through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westberginstitute.org\/faith-community-nursing.html\">Faith Community Nursing<\/a>. This kind of nursing indicates an approach to wellbeing from a faith-based or spiritual perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are receptive to the needs of any religious affiliation, and any non-religious affiliation if that be the case,\u201d O\u2019Mallon said. \u201cWe want to meet the clients where they are spiritually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-194770\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/05\/Showcase-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"OMallon laughs with guests outside the self-care room at the school of nursing.\" class=\"wp-image-194770\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">O&#8217;Mallon (right) is a proponent of self-care, pictured here educating guests at the self-care stop on a School of Nursing Showcase tour.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Care from faith community nurses can take various forms, but nurses are encouraged to serve where they\u2019re already known and trusted. For O\u2019Mallon, this meant Hope Lutheran Church in Eagle. Throughout the pandemic, she partnered with a task force in her church congregation to work on the logistics of keeping their large population of fragile, vulnerable and immunocompromised people socially connected and attending outdoor services rain, snow or sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also served at the Boise Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital. O\u2019Mallon worked for 16 years as a civilian nurse in military clinics and hospitals, and significant portions of her career were spent in Germany and Savannah, Georgia. Upon first moving to Boise, O\u2019Mallon connected with the Boise VA hospital and volunteered to be a bedside companion for hospice and end-of-life patients. One particular young veteran was in end-of-life care and asked for a social companion, so O\u2019Mallon spent time with her before she died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was a very brief relationship because the veteran\u2019s life was very short,\u201d O\u2019Mallon said. \u201cBut it was very beautiful, in the sense that she appreciated that this nurse was also affiliated with the military as an army spouse, and so we shared stories about Germany, family, nature, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-194769\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2023\/05\/RNBS-fac-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"OMallon stands with three other RN-BS Completion program faculty.\" class=\"wp-image-194769\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">O&#8217;Mallon (second from right) pictured with other faculty from the RN-BS Completion program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O\u2019Mallon also remotely worked for several years with an elderly widowed woman living in Florida. They first met in Germany in the 1980s and reconnected in 2018. O\u2019Mallon spent many hours on the phone simply offering companionship, but as the relationship developed, O\u2019Mallon went on to help her as a nurse advocate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe often said, \u2018I don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s wrong with me, and I don&#8217;t understand what the discharge plan was,\u2019\u201d O\u2019Mallon said. English is this woman\u2019s second language, and with many simultaneous complex health issues \u2013 from depression to heart failure to risk of falling \u2013 O\u2019Mallon was drawn to help her with more than social needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the other side of the country, O\u2019Mallon spent countless hours communicating by phone and email with the woman\u2019s primary care physician, psychiatrist and nurses. Together, they worked through medication reconciliation and coordinated care between various providers including home health and physical therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor her age, she was on so many medications that really interacted with each other and maybe even contradicted each other,\u201d O\u2019Mallon said. \u201cWe saw the importance of provider-to-provider communication and for medication reconciliation, to really go through her medication profile to determine dosages and appropriate medications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-193725\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"664\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2022\/10\/NursingShowcase_052-sq664.jpg\" alt=\"Shelle Poole and Marilyn OMallon stand and smile in the hallway.\" class=\"wp-image-193725\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">O&#8217;Mallon (right) pictured with Divisional Dean Shelle Poole during the School of Nursing showcase in fall 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O\u2019Mallon was so struck by her experience working with this woman, she published a case study journal article examining best practices of palliative care for the frail elderly. O\u2019Mallon then has the opportunity to present her work to Boise\u2019s network of faith community nurses at the invitation of Cari Moodie, the Faith Community Nurse Coordinator at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, Moodie commended O\u2019Mallon in a letter of recommendation, saying, \u201cDr. O\u2019Mallon demonstrates outstanding service to our community and leadership in the field of faith community nursing.
