But why are these included?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are official moments to recognize individuals\u2019 hard work or express gratitude, while others are steeped in decades of tradition like a cup of strong Earl Grey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read on to discover the elements of history that make Convocation what it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wondering what the difference is between Convocation, Graduation and Commencement? pictured in 1971.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before Boise State held its Convocation Ceremony, we had a pinning ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The field of nursing has a long history of \u201cpinning\u201d ceremonies; these are attributed to the tradition of award ceremonies in which an individual receives a medal of distinction or merit that is pinned on.<\/p>\n<p>Widely considered the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale received the <a href=\"https:\/\/collection.nam.ac.uk\/detail.php?acc=1963-10-54-3\">Royal Red Cross<\/a> from Queen Victoria for her work during the Crimean War. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2010\/08\/11\/who-is-the-real-florence-nightingale\/\">Nightingale<\/a> went on to award pins to particular students who excelled in her nursing school. But what\u2019s the connection to nursing?<\/p>\n<p>Although Disney brought the genie\u2019s oil lamp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/reviews\/aladdin-1992\">into pop culture<\/a> in 1992, Nightingale has claims to the symbol over a century earlier. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow further immortalized Nightingale\u2019s title in his 1857 poem \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/past\/docs\/unbound\/poetry\/nov1857\/filomena.htm\">Santa Filomena<\/a>\u2019, referring to \u2018a lady with a lamp.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Artists continued to interpret her lamp to be the oil variety, as portrayed in another popular painting of Nightingale by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henrietta_Rae\">Henrietta Rae<\/a> in 1891.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_195733\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-195733\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-image wp-image--caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-195733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2024\/04\/The_lady_with_the_lamp_Henrietta-Rae-web-opt.jpg\" alt=\"A woman draped in a cream shawl and holding an oil lamp stands by the bed of a soldier.\" width=\"277\" height=\"350\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-195733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"width: 277px\" style=\"width: 277px\">Reprint of Henrietta Rae&#8217;s interpretation of Florence Nightingale.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today we know from historical artifacts from the Crimean War that Nightingale\u2019s lamp was most likely a <a href=\"https:\/\/collection.nam.ac.uk\/detail.php?acc=1962-12-29-1\">paper lantern<\/a>. But <a href=\"https:\/\/theclassicphotomag.com\/florence-nightingale-the-mysteries-behind-her-iconic-photographs\/\">the imagery<\/a> stuck.<\/p>\n<p>Even today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ana-illinois.org\/what-is-a-nurses-honor-guard\/\">Nurse Honor Guards<\/a> light this form of lamp while honoring a nurse\u2019s passing. At the end of their tribute, they extinguish the flame and present the family of the nurse with the lamp, similar to how military family members receive a folded American flag.<\/p>\n\n                                                <\/div>\n                                            <\/div>\n                                                                            <\/div>\n                                <\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n                                                    <div class=\"faq__section\">\n                                                                    <div class=\"faq__section-title\" data-section-start=\"Apricot\"\n                                         id=\"Apricot\">\n                                        <h3>Apricot<\/h3>\n                                    <\/div>\n                                                                <div class=\"faq__question-contain\">\n                                    <div class=\"list\">\n                                                                                    <div class=\"faq__question\">\n                                                                                                    <div class=\"faq__question__title\">\n                                                        <h4 class=\"faq__question__title-item\">Origins of academic colors<\/h4>\n                                                    <\/div>\n                                                                                                <div class=\"faq__question__answer t-content\">\n                                                    <p>In terms of formal academic apparel, nursing stoles \u2013 the sash that drapes over graduates\u2019 shoulders \u2013 are always apricot. But why not peach or plum, if we\u2019re choosing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allrecipes.com\/article\/what-is-stone-fruit\/\">stone fruit<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>This answer is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graduateaffairs.com\/academic-costume-code-ceremony-guide-ezp-13.html\">a bit convoluted<\/a>. While academic apparel tradition dates back multiple centuries in the United Kingdom, America\u2019s roots trace to the late 1880s.<\/p>\n<p>A group of east coast universities standardized regalia and created the <a href=\"https:\/\/intercollegiate-registry.org\/\">Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume<\/a> in 1895. The code specifies designs and colors based on varying universities, degree level and area of study.<\/p>\n\n                                                <\/div>\n                                            <\/div>\n                                                                                    <div class=\"faq__question\">\n                                                                                                    <div class=\"faq__question__title\">\n                                                        <h4 class=\"faq__question__title-item\">The first colors<\/h4>\n                                                    <\/div>\n                                                                                                <div class=\"faq__question__answer t-content\">\n                                                    <p>The original eight colors and corresponding areas of study were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arts and Letters \u2013 White<\/li>\n<li>Fine Arts \u2013 Brown<\/li>\n<li>Law \u2013 Purple<\/li>\n<li>Medicine \u2013 Green<\/li>\n<li>Music \u2013 Pink<\/li>\n<li>Philosophy \u2013 Blue<\/li>\n<li>Science \u2013 Gold Yellow<\/li>\n<li>Theology \u2013 Scarlet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The colors were intended to remain broadly applicable within fields of study. For example, both graduates of chemistry and engineering would wear gold yellow, since they are areas of science.<\/p>\n\n                                                <\/div>\n                                            <\/div>\n                                                                                    <div class=\"faq__question\">\n                                                                                                    <div class=\"faq__question__title\">\n                                                        <h4 class=\"faq__question__title-item\">Changes over time<\/h4>\n                                                    <\/div>\n                                                                                                <div class=\"faq__question__answer t-content\">\n                                                    <figure class=\"wp-image wp-image--no-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-195737\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2024\/04\/Lamp-on-stole-sq664.jpg\" alt=\"Two students wear blue and orange regalia and hold pompoms in front of a Bronco Nurse backdrop.\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" \/><\/figure><p>So where did apricot come from?<\/p>\n<p>The answer isn\u2019t clear, but as <a href=\"https:\/\/intercollegiate-registry.org\/faculty-colors\/\">academic discipline colors<\/a> were added over the next century, nursing most likely received its unique designation around 1931.<\/p>\n<p>So wear it loud and proud, as academics across the United States recognize it as a sign of your nursing education.<\/p>\n\n                                                <\/div>\n                                            <\/div>\n                                                                            <\/div>\n                                <\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n                                                    <div class=\"faq__section\">\n                                                                    <div class=\"faq__section-title\" data-section-start=\"Oath\"\n                                         id=\"Oath\">\n                                        <h3>Oath<\/h3>\n                                    <\/div>\n                                                                <div class=\"faq__question-contain\">\n                                    <div class=\"list\">\n                                                                                    <div class=\"faq__question\">\n                                                                                                <div class=\"faq__question__answer t-content\">\n                                                    <p>While reciting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/hmd\/topics\/greek-medicine\/index.html#:~:text=The%20Oath\">Hippocratic Oath<\/a> is a practice attributed to medical school students, Boise State\u2019s Convocation includes a Nursing Oath. This oath does not originate with the Ancient Greeks, but <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/indetroitcourage00cratrich\/page\/80\/mode\/2up\">its first draft<\/a> was named in honor of Florence Nightingale. Sometimes, this occurs during the Convocation ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daisyfoundation.org\/daisy-award\">Daisy Foundation<\/a> partners with thousands of organizations across the globe to recognize outstanding nurses through this award.
