{"id":45962,"date":"2014-10-13T11:41:28","date_gmt":"2014-10-13T17:41:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hs.boisestate.edu\/?p=45962"},"modified":"2014-10-13T11:41:28","modified_gmt":"2014-10-13T17:41:28","slug":"skardong-edgren-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/2014\/10\/13\/skardong-edgren-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Endowed Chair Consulted on Recently Released, Landmark National Simulation Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Suzan Kardong-Edgren<\/strong>, Jody DeMeyer Endowed Chair for Nursing, was a part of the team of authors on the recently released National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). \u201cNational Simulation Study: A Longitudinal, Randomized, Controlled Study Replacing Clinical Hours with Simulation in Prelicensure Nursing Education\u201d was published in the NCSBN\u2019s Journal of Nursing Regulation in August. It is the most comprehensive research to date that examines the use of simulation in nursing education.<\/p>\n<p>The longitudinal study included incoming nursing students from 10 prelicensure programs across the U.S. who were randomized to one of three study groups:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Control group (traditional clinical where up to 10 percent of clinical time was allowed in simulation)<\/li>\n<li>25 percent simulation in place of traditional clinical hours<\/li>\n<li>50 percent simulation in place of traditional clinical hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study began in the 2011 fall semester with the first clinical nursing course and continued throughout the core clinical courses to graduation in May 2013. Students were assessed on clinical competency and nursing knowledge. They provided ratings on how well they perceived their learning needs were met in both the clinical and simulation environments. A total of 666 students completed the study requirements at the time of graduation.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that up to 50 percent simulation was effectively substituted for traditional clinical experience in all core courses across the prelicensure nursing curriculum. Additionally, the use of up to 50 percent simulation did not affect NCLEX pass rates.<\/p>\n<p>Study participants were also followed into their first six months of clinical practice. The study found that there were no meaningful differences between the groups in critical thinking, clinical competency and overall readiness for practice as rated by managers at six weeks, three months and six months after working in a clinical position.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Becky Bunderson, director of the College of Health Sciences Simulation Center, and the Boise State School of Nursing faculty and students were thanked for piloting scenarios in the acknowledgements of the published study.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Suzan Kardong-Edgren, Jody DeMeyer Endowed Chair for Nursing, was a part of the team of&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":202,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4072,4071,421],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-45962","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cohs-news","category-son-news","category-simulation-center"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.2 (Yoast SEO v27.2) -
