{"id":80582,"date":"2018-10-09T14:54:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T20:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hs.boisestate.edu\/?p=80582"},"modified":"2018-10-09T14:54:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-09T20:54:10","slug":"lucy-zhao-celebrates-publication-of-her-manuscript-to-journal-of-gerontological-nursing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/nursing\/2018\/10\/09\/lucy-zhao-celebrates-publication-of-her-manuscript-to-journal-of-gerontological-nursing\/","title":{"rendered":"Lucy Zhao Celebrates the Publication of Her Manuscript to Journal of Gerontological Nursing"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_55642\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55642\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-image wp-image--caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55642 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2015\/12\/Zhao_Lucy.jpg\" alt=\"Studio portrait of Lucy Zhao.\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"width: 150px\">Lucy Zhao<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lucy Zhao, assistant professor for the School of Nursing, is celebrating the publication of her manuscript, \u201cA Comprehensive Assessment of Risk Factors for Falls in Community-Dwelling Older Adults\u201d to the peer reviewed Journal of Gerontological Nursing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zhao&#8217;s manuscript, which was also a featured article in the October issue of the journal, is a correlational study to explore risk factors of falls in community-dwelling older adults, which are older adults who are living in the community on their own rather than in nursing homes. She chose this area of study as it is a major health concern in older adults because falls can result in reduced functional abilities, hospitalization, institutionalization, loss of independence, and decreased quality of life. Zhao\u00a0 performed a statistical data analysis to determine which factors increase the probability of falls for these older adults. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a result, she found that older adults who were homebound experienced impaired balance, arthritis, depression, or anxiety and therefore, were at a much higher risk for falls. Homebound older adults were 50 percent more likely to experience a fall than non-homebound individuals. Following homebound individuals, impaired balance was the strongest correlation for individuals experiencing falls.
