Beginning September 22, YouTube videos embedded in Canvas may display advertisements. This change is due to an update in how Instructure (Canvas’s parent company) integrates with YouTube. These ads are controlled by YouTube and cannot be disabled within Canvas.
Youtube videos in Canvas will have an automatic message overlay to alert viewers of potential ads and to see if the viewer wants to proceed with viewing the content . This message will display before the video plays on the browser.
To avoid ads, OIT recommends moving your video content to Panopto and using Panopto to host future videos. Learn more about how to upload media and embed Panopto videos in Canvas. Please note that you must have Creator access in order to upload video files into Panopto. Contact the Help Desk for assistance in gaining access.
For YouTube videos from others, you will need to decide whether to keep the content and potential ads or find alternative materials. If you prefer to continue using direct YouTube links or embeds, please add a disclaimer so your audience is aware of potential ads. An example disclaimer may read, “Some videos may display advertisements. These ads are not affiliated with or endorsed by Boise State.”
