The Office of Information Technology (OIT) will perform emergency repairs to critical campus fiber infrastructure beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18 through Saturday, March 21.

During this time, network connectivity will be unavailable in the following locations. Employees may need to make arrangements to work from alternate locations, and should refer to the details below.

  • Dona Larsen Park
  • Copper Basin
  • Bronco Gym / Kinesiology Annex
  • Boulder Hall / Pioneer Hall
  • Leatherman Peak
  • Alumni and Friends
  • Maintenance Shops
  • Micron Center for Materials Research
  • Construction Management

Connectivity will be restored as repairs are completed, and some locations may regain service earlier than others.

Why is this happening?

A failed fiber splice case in a network manhole sustained water damage and poses a substantial risk of failure if not repaired. The issue was discovered during preparations to connect the new Construction Management Building to the campus network.

What is impacted?

Wired and wireless networks in the buildings listed above will be unavailable. Services that require network connectivity, including Zoom phones and VPN, will also be unavailable from those locations. Fire alarm panels and door access controls are not expected to be impacted.

What should I do if I need network access?

Employees scheduled to work March 19-20 in affected locations should coordinate with their supervisors to determine if temporary remote work is possible or arrange to work from an alternate campus location, such as Albertsons Library, the Interactive Learning Center, or the Student Union Building. Divisional and college leaders may also help to identify hoteling space in alternate building locations.

Employees whose tasks are not reliant on network access can work as normally scheduled.

If you are aware of unpublished activities or events that will be impacted by this outage, or if you are a supervisor needing assistance identifying alternate work locations, contact the OIT Help Desk at (208) 426-4357.

Why aren’t we receiving more notice?

While repairs of this scope would normally be scheduled with more advance notice, completing the work during the remainder of Spring Break minimizes disruption to academic activities. Delaying repairs would increase the risk of a more serious failure.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact the OIT Help Desk at (208) 426-4357 or email helpdesk@boisestate.edu.

We recognize this disruption is significant and appreciate your understanding as we complete this critical work.
