These scams aim to steal your account credentials, which hackers can then use to alter direct deposit information and compromise personal data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A concerning number of our colleagues have fallen victim to these attacks.&nbsp;The following are examples of recent phishing emails, along with the signs of what to recognize to avoid compromising your data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-workplace-safety-email\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Workplace safety email<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An email with the subject, &#8220;Workplace Safety: Updates on Recent Health Developments,&#8221; successfully deceived several faculty and staff. Many faculty and staff members were misled by this email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/workplace_safety_email-1024x395.png\" alt=\"Phishing example showing highlighted areas that give away that this is not a legitimate email message.\" class=\"wp-image-2000010217\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-signs-this-email-was-a-phishing-attempt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs this email was a phishing attempt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"237\" height=\"31\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/postmaster_example.png\" alt=\"Screenshot from email showing 'postmaster' from: address and reads 'Health Services' via postmaster\" class=\"wp-image-2000010223\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suspicious sender:<\/strong> While Boise State does have a &#8216;postmaster&#8217; account, it is not used to send targeted or mass email. Instead, it is an administrative email account used for managing and overseeing the function of our email domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"25\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/wellness_support_office.png\" alt=\"Screenshot from email showing 'Wellness Support Office'\" class=\"wp-image-2000010224\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The email recommends contacting the Wellness Support Office:<\/strong> The university does not have a &#8216;Wellness Support Office&#8217; (it <em>does<\/em> have a Wellness Services department). The curly braces surrounding the link text are red flag and should prompt caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"146\" height=\"27\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/boise-health-service.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of 'Boise Health Service' signature in email.\" class=\"wp-image-2000010226\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The email is signed from Boise Health Service:<\/strong> The university does not have a &#8216;Boise Health Service&#8217; department (it <em>does<\/em> have a Boise State Health Services department).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fake login page: <\/strong>Clicking on the &#8216;Wellness Support Office&#8217; link directed users to a fraudulent login page on a compromised external website. Although the page looked like Boise State\u2019s, the web address was unrelated to the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"518\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/fake_otp.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of a fake Duo security prompt appearing on a fake Boise State login page. The text in the image is: &quot;Please enter the OTP received via phone\/email.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-2000010222\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The fake login page requested a multi-factor authentication (MFA) security code:<\/strong> After signing in to the fake login page (which gave away the employee&#8217;s username and password), the employee encountered a MFA code prompt Boise State does not use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"365\" height=\"481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/fake_duo_verify.png\" alt=\"Example of a Duo Push message that did not come from Boise State. All but the last four digits of the phone number are masked.\" class=\"wp-image-2000010227\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A MFA Prompt for login confirmation:<\/strong> The hackers next logged in using the employees username and password, then sent an MFA notification. The employees received the notification and confirmed it. Note that if you receive a MFA method that you don&#8217;t typically use (i.e. getting a phone call when you typically use Verified Push) you should not accept the prompt. Additionally, you should always treat MFA prompts that appear when you are not actively logging in as suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the fake login page and MFA prompts are clever, they would have been avoided if the victims had recognized the unusual elements of the email message itself and suspected it could be a phishing message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-university-health-services-infection-reported-email\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">University Health Services &#8220;Infection Reported&#8221; email<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An email with the subject, &#8220;Campylobacter Infection Reported&#8221;* also caused several employees to respond by providing their Boise State credentials to hackers. We have seen many derivatives of this email message on campus, all of which use &#8220;Health Services&#8221; or &#8220;University Health Services&#8221; in the from: field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><small><strong>*<\/strong>Variations on this subject line include &#8220;Monkeypox,&#8221; &#8220;Mpox,&#8221; and &#8220;COVID.&#8221;<\/small><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/campylobacter_email-1024x553.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of phishing email purportedly from University Health Services.\" class=\"wp-image-2000010228\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-signs-this-was-a-phishing-attempt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs this was a phishing attempt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"443\" height=\"28\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/alpkagan_screenshot.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of non-Boise State email address in the From: field.\" class=\"wp-image-2000010229\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The email was sent from &#8216;alpkagan@metu.edu.tr&#8217;:<\/strong> The email is from \u2018alpkagan@metu.edu.tr,\u2019 clearly not a Boise State address. Always check the sender\u2019s email closely, and be cautious of any non-university addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"157\" height=\"28\" src=\"https:\/\/www.boisestate.edu\/oit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/10\/access_case_details.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of the Access Case Details link in the email message.\" class=\"wp-image-2000010230\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suspicious request: <\/strong>The email asks recipients to click a link that goes to an authentication page to view case details. Health-related emails rarely require login authentication, especially for viewing sensitive information. The curly braces surrounding the link text are red flag and should prompt caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fake login page (again): <\/strong>The link directed employees to the same fake Boise State login page (along with the same fake MFA prompts) mentioned in the Workplace Safety Email section above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-you-can-protect-yourself\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How you can protect yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You<\/em> are the best prevention against phishing attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As phishing scams grow more sophisticated, your vigilance is the best line of defense. Here\u2019s what you can do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Examine emails carefully:<\/strong> Before clicking any link, take a moment to scrutinize the email. Look for discrepancies like unusual sender addresses, department names, odd formatting, and requests that feel out of place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emails on mobile devices require additional caution:<\/strong> It may be difficult to determine the actual account sender or other significant warning signs of phishing. We suggest waiting to take any action on an email that could be a phishing attempt until you can review the email on a desktop or laptop computer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t fall for urgency:<\/strong> Phishing emails often create a sense of urgency to prompt quick actions without thinking. Be cautious of emails that insist you act immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verify links before clicking:<\/strong> Hover over links to see where they actually lead. If the web address doesn\u2019t look like a Boise State address, don\u2019t click it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consult the Help Desk:<\/strong> If you\u2019re unsure about an email, don\u2019t take a risk.
